Yesterday as I was flying the VFR corridor between HOU and IAH in my rented C172 tail number N737HC imagine my surprise when I caught the controller telling 37HC to slow down as you have a 180 knot overtake on the plane in front of you. Considering my IAS was 100 knots and I was flying into a 20 knot headwind, confirmed by the GPS and the fact that most of the cars and a few truck on I10 below me were passing me, it caught me off guard. Before I could embarrass myself Southwest 37HC answered up with an affirmative. Not to be out done, later as I approached KDWH my destination, I was on the channel with 836HC. The controller had a few problems with both of us but finally I just asked for permission to contact Hooks tower and he sounded relieved to grant permission.

Two questions, what WN flight has the suffix Hotel Charlie on it? And considering the flight was in Bravo airspace, how do you get a 180 knot overtake on anything other than an ultralight or a balloon?

Time permitting, most controllers will alert you when an aircraft/flight with a similar callsign is on frequency with you...that happens to me all the time when I rent N98344 and the "other" 344 come on frequency with me (and there's also a N98544 in the PDX area!). Did the controller give you a heads up on this?

Also, you sure you heard "Southwest?" Some controllers talk so fast that you can't possibly comprehend them.

Also, you sure it wasn't this 37HC? http://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/N37HC.html King air 90's (especially w/uprated engines and a good tailwind) are hotrods  Wink

"King Air" and "South West" are both two syllables!

OPLN I was hoping you catch this. Lost me with the shorthand but regardless, it was a Southwest flight, he crossed 2 miles right in front of me. I was surprised to hear it as well. When the controller talked to him again he emphasized "Southwest". I was certainly left wondering.

OPNL-Right around 3pm local. I was heading up from KGLS. Certainly is a lot nicer flying in there now that they have an operational tower. You don't feel like your taking your life in your hands.

KELP-No, there was a lifeguard flight in the area but his numbers were nowhere close to mine.

I guess what really intrigued me was the overtake speed the controller gave, seemed awfully fast.

We have a SWA37 DAL-HOU, but he doesn't depart DAL until 3:30 ETA HOU 4:25, so it doesn't sound like him. I also checked the flight numbers of everything into HOU and no other flight numbers even came close to "37".

I'm certainly not going to tell you what you did/didn't hear (since I wasn't there), but the only thing I can tell you is the info above. Maybe the controller miscalled aircraft Nnn37HC a Southwest flight?

Yeah, that could be, there was a large gap between the controller call and the response. I was a microsecond from hitting the transmitt button to ask for repeat when that guy answered. No big thing, I was actually surprised it was as quiet as it was at that time of day. I figured they would deny me the corridor due to volume but happily not so. The only reason I got caught off guard was that I was chuckling thinking about Sid Ceaser in "It's a mad mad mad world" when he was in the bi-plane watching the cars pass him as they were me on I10.

The King Air 37HC is often in the Houston area.....and for the confusion over the call sign, it is just that, confusion, WN does not use call signs that end in HC period...ever.
So Gilligan what runway was HOU landing that the WN jet crossed 2 miles in front of you, and at what altitude with you in the I-10 coridoor and how do you know that was the same WN airplane??? As for your concern Gilligan of the 180 kt overtake, when on a visual the controller will often use the groundspeed to issue an overtake to the second aircraft which with the winds this winter could very easily have been only an 80 kt overtake that you may have misunderstood......and if it was a 180 kt overtake the 1st aircraft was maybe the WN jet at a lower altitude say 1,800 while the real 37HC the King Air may have been at 3,000 or so with a much different wind, such as tailwind while at 1,800 SW had a headwind. That last senario is a real situation with WN being very slow and stable prior to the final approach fix with the King Air hauling it a 250 KIAS still just starting to slow.

Hope this made some sense but for sure WN was not an HC at the end of the call sign.....and when similiar call signs it pays to listen up as you know but we do attempt to alert both airplanes to the similiar sounding numbers.

Well, at least nobody in a Beech 18 flew through a billboard and came at you...  Smile

(I read a book some years back that said the billboard was made from balsa wood and stryofoam, yet they still managed to fail an engine shortly after going through it. Never showed up in the fil, of course...)

Got me, wasn't going there, never have, don't have any reason too. The WN jet was headed s-sw about 1000-1500 feet above me, I was at 1700 feet, s make him at about 3000. No gear, just cruising along. How do I know? I don't know, that's why I asked. I heard the controller say "southwest 37HC". Maybe he opened his mic a bit too quickly but there for sure was a gap between his message and a response. I wouldn't have thought anything about it except for the second call a few minutes later.

Well I know all about that with the similar amount of express flight numbers we have, but they weren't doing it yesterday. No problems it just seemed strange, that's all.
