Pay More For "brand Name" Food Inflight?

Got the idea for this thread from another one. Seeing that most US carriers either offer junk food for free or charge a nominal fee for decent food onboard most domestic flights, would anyone be willing to pay more for "brand name" meals? Examples:

- Gourmet salads for $7.50
- Panini sandwiches and gourmet chips for $10
- Combination soup/salad or soup/sandwich for $12.50

I don't work in marketing, nor do I work for an airline, but thought that well known restaurant chains (TGI Friday's, Chili's, etc.) would be all over the idea as it would help market their brand. The airline's additional cost in procuring the meals could be offset by a contractual agreement that would have the restaurant essentially pay to have their food advertized.

Another option to reduce logistical issues would be to give passengers the option of "ordering" and paying for their meal when they purchase their ticket. On onboard credit/debit swipe machine (some airlines are supposedly contemplating this option) would eliminate the need to produce change.

Anyone have thoughts about this?

Actually, United and other tried this, and did charge more for BOB initially. The $10 pricing point wasn't working for travellers and the brand name stuff usually was crap, so they went with no name stuff that is much better and cheaper

B.Y.O.F. It's so much easier to just get what you want in the terminal. The cost would be the same probably. I pay about $7 in Boston for a "gourmet" Chicken Ceasar Salad. Not bad, and it holds me over for a flight down to Florida and back up.

Your idea is good but their are problems with keeping the food fresh. Fresh food has a short shelf life. If it is frozen it may take longer to heat or be over heated by the F/A.

Let Chili's and othe restaurants do what they do best.

Keep the "gourmet" food with them and let us focus on providing safe, reliable transportation.

I for one am glad we are nearly out of the food business. We buy the food from vendors and it's almost always of inferior quality. Then we get blamed for service "cheap" (which it is not) food.

With Chili's and the like, the customer knows what they are getting. And if it turns out not to be to their liking, they blame Chili's.

Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

fly Song and buy their food on board... i wihch DL kept this going when they merge Song to mainline. I normally buy food at he airport before i board, but sometimes i don't have time and board hungry with little choices to eat on board (except when flying Song  Smile )
