Either I am confused or there is something going on that I don't understand:
there seems to be construction of a new airport in Dubai, in the Jebel Ali area. At the same time, there is construction work going on at the current airport for a new terminal.
What's the reason behind this? Will the new airport only open much later, so that the new terminal is needed right away to "bridge" the time? Or will the current airport stay open once the new one has opened (i.e. Dubai will have 2 airports?)
Maybe someone can clarify this and give the timelines of the various developments going on.

Jebel Ali Airport will not be ready until more like 2011 or 2012. However in the nexting coming years it will be operational for Cargo and LLC flights.
So the current Dubai Airport will be for all the International Flights ... and don't forget that EK have 130 planes on order!!!! Which means they need all the space that they can get... most of these planes will be operational by 2008 ... while Jebel Ali Airport can only start taking them in by 2011 ... so where do we put them??? Hence DXB expansion...
I guess other factors are linked and related like the idea that EK will be operating out of DXB while other airlines, LLC's and Cargo Flights will operate out of Jebel Ali...

Somehow I'm amazed too at this question and wondering how it will happen. There was an article about Jebel Ali in "Airports of the World" but it didn't say how it will be happening in the future.
For some reason, I guess that EK will more likely be operatong from Jebel Ali? They have six runways, and they have as you said 130 planes on order, all of them longhaul which need a good airport for a faster turnaround time and passenger boarding/deboarding time.
I'd be amazed that EK stays in the "old" airport. But well, time will tell!
