great! so we can watch telly with our bellies rumbling. I would rather have a free snack served on a 2 hour flight rather than watch tv.

Funny how airlines try to cut frills, taking away meals and charging for drinks but yet provide state of the art in flight entertainment systems. Is it really necessary to have seat back tv on regional aircraft?

I think so, its great to entertain their passengers for few hours. Sure why not. If its only for few hours I don't think its going to kill you for not having a snack on board. I thought traveling is their job to take you from point a to point b? If its a long distance traveling I can understand they should supply meal and or snack but on short haul flight gee give me a break on a few hours or short I don't expect to get fed.

well equally I cant see why seat back television is necessary on short sectors. On longer flights, yes but short regional flights I think i could make do with a newspaper. It seems a lot of expense installing the system on short haul aircraft at a time when airlines are cutting costs and services in other areas.

These are not short regional flights. AC's Embraer fleet will usually do flights from 1.5 hours to almost five hours (like Toronto-Kelowna), and the Jazz 705s are doing flights in the 2-4 hour timeframe (like Calgary-Houston). The EMB-175 is doing Toronto-Dallas which is a 3-hour flight. It's the 50 seaters that don't have TV that do the short regional flights. But frankly, if I had a choice even for a one-hour flight, I'd go for AVOD over food, because I can always get a croissant and coffee in the terminal or buy off the inflight service menu, but I can't get AVOD unless I want to schlepp my electronics with me, which I usually don't.

The same applies to families travelling with young children. It's easy to bring a long a snack pack - you want them to eat healthy foods anyway - but it's hard to keep them entertained for three hours without bringing along the electronic toys and books, etc. AC's AVOD is supposed to have games and children's programming. I don't know the quality of either, but if I were a parent, I can pack some veggies and drinking boxes and not have to worry about the whole entertaining thing.

Well I can survive without the rubbish that masquerades as television these days. As for kids programmes and electronic games, its a wonder children are not growing up daft as brushes with all the claptrap they watch. Far better to have an hour without tv and fetch along a good book.

AVOD is NOT live TV. It stands for Audio/Visual on demand. I don't know if you have on-demand media in the UK, it's been a while since I have been to England. But it means you choose the programming you want from a menu of available entertainment. That includes music and story-telling and a lot of other product.

However, to the best of my knowledge, no airline will ever force you to watch a movie or listen to music, so enjoy your hour of good reading.
