I know Pluna have rights to TLV.
And I heard so many times, they would start flights to Israel.
Is it ever come true?
There's a large jewish community in Argentina,Brazil and Uruguay.
Wouldn't it be cool to have finally a direct flight to Israel from South America?

That link will become true next April with Air Madrid flying MAD-TLV 2x weekly with A310, and with good connecting times to South America.

As for Pluna, I think a non-stop flight from Israel to South America is not possible right now. The market is almost purely tourists and VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives), which means very low-yields. Besides, this kind of people usually go for the cheapest option, no matter if they have to change planes once or even twice until reaching the final destination. And loads during the non-holiday months should be quite bad.

Pluna right now has only one 767-300ER which is only used for the MVD-GIG-MAD 3x weekly rotation. Apparently they have been doing very well with this route, and are even considering getting a second plane to serve it daily. Their other planes by no means can reach TLV - 757, 732, 733 and ATR-42.

The only big player in the South America-Israel market is the Sochnut Ha'Yehudim, the Jewish Agency, which sponsors trips to Israel for Jewish young people (Birthright Program), and Aliyah (immigration) programs. The Sochnut always wants its people to fly El Al, at least on one segment of their routes. Currently they choose Iberia, because of the codeshare with LY on the MAD-TLV route.

Airlines have rights to many places they don't serve. LY has rights for Rio de Janeiro, and they have never flown there, same for EK to EZE/GRU/GIG and many others.

Saludos,
Marambio

I wish to see EK very soon flying to South America ! I don't imagine LY flying to GIG so soon.

And nowadays they keep their only 763 grounded at GIG/CEMAN and the route MVD-GIG-MAD is really doing very well.

Pluna used to fly to Tel Aviv a few years ago. It was a DC - 10 but it did not last long.

Argentina and Brasil have way bigger jew population and don´t have flights to Israel, why would PLuna have them!?

LOL yes I think it was because we had very close relations at the time. The route as I recall was via Madrid and Rome. I was very surprised at the time and sure enough it did not last long.
They probably counted on connections from Buenos Aires.
El Al about 30 years ago tried to fly to Brazil and Argentina. Varig / Brazil refused to give landing rights and LY was pretty upset. Without permission to land in Brazil, the route was thought to be unfeaseable.

= I remember this ... and it was actually in response to an earlier filed VARIG motion (which probably would never have materialized) which filed GRU-GIG-MAD-FCO-TLV. Israel/ELAL blocked the motion.

I am super surprised with the PL thing. Does anyone have a historic timetable? Would love to see routings, times, connection info, etc.

Cheers,
A.

Also i believe it's a flight that should work with good loads/yields on a 2/3x weekly basis. Immigration & trade could really support such flight.LY should use their rights to GIG or even to SP.
