Hey everyone,

I've just been sent an invitation to go to one of Freedom Air's cabin crew candidate walk-in days, next week.

Is anyone from Freedom Air here?? Can anyone explain what happens on these days and how to be prepared for it?

Also what's working for Freedom Air like?

I have some involvement with SJ. Walk up interview is exactly like you would expect. Walk in, you'll have a chat (not sure of exact format) and if they like you, you will move on to the next stage (they are currently advertising both internally and externally for candidates, expect their to be a large number, many with previous aviation and airline experience). You will work quite hard when checked to line. Overnights in AKL, HLZ, PMR, WLG, CHC and DUD (depending on weather you get an AKL, HLZ or CHC basing will alter where most of your overnights end up). Starting pay is shall we say not overly flash but it's a start.

Any other questions just ask, i'll see if I can answer them.

You should note that Freedom will most probably be taking over the entire NZ A320 fleet and operating NZ flights, wearing NZ uniforms and providing NZ cabin service for SJ pay. While this means a slight pay increase for SJ staff, it comes at the cost of undercutting (however unwillingly) NZ shorthaul crew.

As NZ crew this doesn't affect me personally, however I feel for both my NZ and SJ colleagues, NZ who will lose money by being involuntarily undercut by SJ crew, and SJ staff, who will end up performing a role completely different from the one they joined SJ to do in the first place, while the company laughs through it's hat that they're doing it for peanuts!

I fly for PacificBlue for less pay than Air New Zealand.

I consider we work very hard, as we clean our aircraft, sell product on board, restock food and beverage carts ourselves during flight, and on turnaround... etc

So the question is, am I underpaid, or are Air New Zealand crew currently overpaid?

I don't think that's a question either of us can give an unbiased answer to. You no doubt think we NZ crew are overpaid, we think you're underpaid and should be getting more for the extra work you do such as cleaning.

I don't have an extravagant life - I don't own my own home, I drive a Japanese import car, don't go out to eat a lot or buy a lot of clothes - but i'd find it hard to maintain even my modest lifestyle on the wages DJ and SJ staff get.

I'm no communist, but I sometimes wonder: If a corporation's basic growth and survival plan excludes the possibility of the staff getting paid a wage that allows them to maintain a decent basic lifestyle, then what's the point of its existence, other than to line the pockets of its management and shareholders?

For a first time applying for airline work, pay isn't too much of a factor (yet).

On the day, what are these assessment activities?

It seems the low cost airlines really have their cabin crews working for their money, maybe some of the bigger airlines should be getting their crew to do the same to cut costs? Or is it happening to the point where someone like SJ/DJ might be overworking cabin crew?

Yikes that's funny. Traditionally/sterotype flight attendants get paid a lot of money. But I guess with these LCC's things are changing....

Anyway, for me a job is one I will enjoy and that will give me money I need to live ... I'm not complaining otherwise.

Wouldn't SJ be wearing their uniform and providing their service? Similar to Qantas and Jetstar, Qantas has withdrawn most Trans Tasman services it seems in favour of Jetstar operating them................ anything similar?

I'm still paid well over the average wage for this country and manage very comfortably to lead a lifestyle that I feel is better than "decent", and "basic".

I absolutely love my job, and most days don't even feel it to be "work" - this satisfaction coupled with really good remmuneration mean I'm not complaining at all!

TG990, you'll love your new career in the sky. Which base are you interviewing for? All the best and keep us posted!

Well after speaking to my friends who fly for SJ and a friend who is a fully trained hairdresser and the cabin crew earn more than he does so they earn a lolt more than the apprentices he knows ....
