This question dawned on me while watching the Amazing Race 7 (reruns on GSN), where teams had to, on the last leg, fly from Montego Bay to San Juan via Miami...the Latin American Expert here (MAH4546) should be able to answer this for me...Thanks for everyone's input in advance...

Well, if they were to fly a Monday or Thrusday, they could have driven to KIN and flown CM via PTY to SJU !!
For inter-island traffic a KIN-SJU would have worked better than a MBJ-SJU, Jamaica isn't that big a destination from SJU, but since AA has a Caribbean hub there, flying from KIN to SJU to other english speaking islands could have been good. Too bad now U.S. visas are required to transit SJU and AA hub there is no longer that attractive for Caribbean people.

I am guessing that most passengers to/from MBJ are American and Canadian, as well as European tourists. Also guessing that there isnt very much O/D between Montego Bay and San Juan. If anything, service between the two cities could be operated by ATRs, however they are 782 miles apart, making it a bit long. I do not think AA flies any MD-80s or ERJs out of SJU, so the smallest plane would be a 737-800, which sounds like too much aircraft for a MBJ-SJU run, when most passengers could connect on to their destinations from MIA. I think if AA saw a profit, they'd send in a plane. I see service to KIN more likely, as i dont think a flight between Jamaica and Puerto Rico would cater to tourists.

The SJU hub is mostly to connect the US East coast with the Eastern Caribbean. Going to MBJ, SJU is way out of the way, and can be much more effectively handled via MIA.

Air Jamaica Express had (or still has?) a flight from KIN to SDQ. If there is traffic there, there should be even more to SJU, but nobody flies nonstop.

If anything they would fly San Juan-Kingston because there is the potential for strong business traffic. However, as people have pointed out, there is little local traffic between San Juan and Jamaica and MBJ is well served from the mainland US.

Two decades ago, JM flew from Jamaica to SJU on 727-200s...not sure about the routing or frequency. Anyone knows? I guess it was a multi-leg sector continuing somewhere else after stopping in SJU.

Isn't AE introducing ERJs in the Caribbean? I could have sworn I read that somewhere.. but my memory isn't great.

Most likely SJU was a stop on the way to ANU/SMX or onto UVF/BGI. JM never did KIN/MBJ-PAP-SDQ-SJU-SXM-ANU or similar
