ANA Orders 3 A320's +2 Leased

All Nipon Airways (ANA) placed an order at airbus for 3 A320's + they will lease 2 more. This is totally unexpected since they announced at the end of 2004 they would switch over to Boeing, with the 737/787 replacing the A320/A321 fleet.

Anybody who knows why they are doing this?

Except that it was widely reported in FLIGHT and elsewhere a few months ago...

There's no change to their plan to replace all the A320s with 737s. I forget the reason they're doing it but it makes sense. (Sort of.) If you trawl through the FLIGHT archives you'll find the explanation.

FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 25th October 2005:

Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) is acquiring five new Airbus A320s as it prepares to start phasing out the type from its fleet and replace it with Boeing 737-700s.

They say it has sold some of its other A320s earlier than expected and, rather than change its plans and have the 737s come in earlier to fill the gap, it has chosen to replace those A320s one-for-one with the new aircraft.

the most strange this is, that they wil phase out 4 A320's and 2/3 A321's in 2006.....

and they dont have that much old Airbusses, the oldest is what? 14 years old?

G'day

Has someone told Airbus already that they have an order?  Wink

Per their latest order and deliveries table ANA does not have outstanding orders.

There are a number of undisclosed orders though, maybe the one of Dec. 01 for 3 x A 320 is for ANA.

Cheers

This order has been known of since October 2005 as this post by Manni will attest too, so not new at all.

That is correct. I can't provide a link to my source but the 3 booked on Dec 1st 2005 are for ANA.

They have just released their fiscal year fleet plan which was posted in this thread by Carpethead in which you will see that they will be replacing an A320, with.....? You guessed it, an A320!

Not strange. ANA wants to fly the most efficient fleet, and not do heavy maintenance on the oldest planes. Many Japan routes are VERY high cycle. If it makes sense to get a few more A320s (which would likely be the last ones out of the fleet), why not? It will take many years to get those 737NG, and the 4-5 year old A320s will have great resale value, no?

In the Airbus press release it says they are wanting to use them to expand on routes to China.
Even though it makes sort of sense, still quite a funny order!

Are they replacing A320's only with 737-700's? Wouldn't -800's make more sense size-wise? But on the Boeing site I got
"All Nippon Airways Japan East Asia 737-700 CF 27-Jun-2003 45"
Odd.

At a guess..... Erm.... Close to none?! But perhaps the sales rep tried "Instead of those A320's, how about a nice A380?!"

NH has a history of keeping their aircraft fleet in a relative new state. Very few aircraft stay longer than 20 years in NH's fleet. Hence, all the 747 classics will be gone this spring and 762s are gone too. The 763s are showing their age interior wise but the new seats/interior will hide the fact that the oldest one is 19 years old. Until the B783 production ramps up, nothing will replace doemstic 763s.
Nevertheless, the A320 order/lease intrigues me. Couldn't Boeing arrange some 738 for delivery in 2007? Or were Airbus's A320 lease/prices too attractive to pass up on to replacing its older A320-211s.

Hi N79969

I'm sorry to nit-pick, but being an "order junkie" I just can't help my self  Smile

Back in October 2005 ANA stated they would take 5, 3 directly on order and 2 on lease. From F.I.

Two will be on operating lease from RBS Aviation Capital while three will be purchased directly from Airbus and transferred to a leasing company under a sale and leaseback deal.

The 2 on Lease from RBS Capital Aviation, whom bought 20 last year, ANA were the first customer to commit to that order which they placed on June 30 of 2005.

Knowing that is a sure sign that I need to get a life sir!

The truth is that ANA is sorry to have disappointed us Airbus fans when ordering B737. Polite and considerate as they are, they are now trying to cancel the order with Boeing, and in the mean time they get more A320s.

Yes, I know, but one can dream  Smile
