Hi all

I've heard about a new Doha Int. Airport.
It has a really great Terminal (like KIX ) and is located beside the Sea.

They said also something about 2008, will they start to build it or will it be finished then?

Thanks for infos!

Regards,
LL

The present airport at DOH is a dump. It's small, crowded, badly organized and is a total disaster at peak hours. Given how busy it is getting and how much QR are growing the airport is at bursting point or very close to it. Last time I was there we had to wait for age to get onto our stand. Given the sheer quality of QR they really deserve a better home.

That said the airport is set to spend 2 billion USD over the next few years to accomodate this growth. As is prudent the expansion will be done in phases.

The structure sort of looks like Chek Lap Kok.

Not true, I was there in 2004 and it was just recently renovated. Sure it is small and is crowded at peak hours, but it is anything but a dump. However, they will need to make it bigger to handle all the new aircraft and passengers that they will bring. The bus ride isn't that bad to/from the planes, but the waiting rooms to board the buses are tiny.

There is one (1) men's washroom in the entire departure hall. (Excluding lounges)
The customs staff are rude and unhelpful.
I once flew in from Sana'a and waited for 90 minutes in line to clear customs.
I also left Doha a day after a major sporting event ended in Qatar and it was absoulte carnage in the departure hall. No room to move at all.
Sure the place is clean but it is still a dump.

Maybe that is why you had such a terrible time....  Yeah sure

I agree... Looks like there will be plenty of room for their A380s.

Hopefuly the new airport will attract some more carriers to Doha  Smile

I'm hoping for these new routes in the next few years:

British Airways LHR-DOH (DIRECT) - 777-200/767-300
Air France CDG-DOH - A319LR/A330-200
KLM AMS-DOH (DIRECT) - 767-300
Thai Airways BKK-DOH or BKK-DXH-DOH - A330-300
Singapore Airlines SIN-DOH or SIN-DXB-DOH - 777-200

Yea, will look great with those beasts at Doha Big grin

It will be a shame to have jetbridges as I enjoy the bus ride to the aircraft  Sad

Gosh, it is almost identical to CLK! (Until, that is, you take out your camera and then, the difference will probably become clear!)

Still, good to see them investing in their future.

The 'curvy' roof of the new terminal looks a bit like the new T4 terminal at MAD! Looks very elegant and has lots of glass.

BTW, is the new facility adjacent to the existing terminal at DOH, or will it be in a completely new location? It appears a new runway is being added; is this corrrect?

When will the new facility be inaugurated? In 2009? Has construction of the new facility started?

If you notice on the first pic (of the new airport) in my post above, you will see the current airport and terminal facilities. The new airport is being built on reclaimed land from the sea on the same site as the current airport.

They began reclaiming land from the sea earlier this year  Smile

Great; when will Phase I of the new facility be completed? In 2009, or later?

Sorry, when I meant earlier this year I meant late 2004, early 2005  Wink

NDIA is due to open in 2009, the first phase will be capable of handling over 12 million passengers a year!

The airport will fully open (all phases completed) in 2015  Smile

This was ANOTHER time. The departure hall is frequently a mess. I flew through DOH about 20 times last year so I like to think that enough chances to see it in a good light at least once.

It's not the worst airport by any means but QR deserve and will get a better home soon.
