What's Happening At LGA Today?

There seem to be no landings or takeoffs on runway 4 and 22 this morning. Planes are being vectored north of the airport, making a series of right turns and then landing on the other runway system (runway 31). This has been going on for a few hours now. I am visually spotting them.

Anyone know what is happening?

Thanks

Matt

If you check out flightaware.com, you will notice the effect I am talking about.

Whats happening besides some upcoming delays due to weather coming in soon. I am stuck in DC for the next week and just started raining hard here this morning. Wonder if a runway is closed or the wind is howlin?

I'm right below the planes and I can tell you that it is very mild outside. I think a runway might be closed but don't see why. I see a a bit of cloud cover just north or where all the aircraft of turning, but I even saw an A319 for Air Canada, fly south through the clouds and join this very uncommon approach into runway 31. Very strange.

I do see many delays for flights inbound as well.

Aiports at times close runways in less than peak hours for any number of reasons. IAH has often used at few hours on a Sunday morning to do some maint work on lights or minor patch work but they coordinate with ATC and the carriers in most cases before scheduling such work but at times a hole in the runway appears and has to be fixed asap so no notice on that closure, but IAH does most of their work at nights. MMMM last time I landed at LGA seems we landed on 31! Enjoy your damp weather coming in soon and happy spotting.

LGA 01/064 - 4/22 CLSD 29 JAN 11:00 UNTIL 29 JAN 17:00

Runway is NOTAMed closed, most likely for routine maintenance work (common for a less-busy Sunday morning)... Supposed to re-open at noon LGA time...

Landing and taking off on 1-3 1-3 is very cool to land on from a passenger stand point. You come in low over Manhattan and make a deries of right hand turns low over Harlem, just north of central park, fly towards and very near Yankee Stadium and land on 1-3. Gonna take a quick flight just to land on 1-3!  Smile

I thought so-- thanks for the information!

Yep-- I have only landed on 4, which is also pretty fun. From BOS you fly south, and can see the west side of Manhattan. Then you make a sharp left hand turn, go over Brooklyn, and then Queens and the... touchdown!

That route you are talking about-- going over Yankee stadium has been severely truncated today. They are flying over Washington Heights, flying parallel to 13 and then going into 31. Im having fun just watching! So many AA MD-80s, two Song 752s and one Midwest Airlines. A ton of CRJs and a few ERJs.

Just a possibility...it could be a TFR maybe? I remember when I flew into LGA during the U.S. open I landed on RWY 31 but we came in straight instead of the expressway visual. On the approach we flew to the north of LGA and past the Throgs Neck and then came back around.

They very rarely use runway 13 for arrivals. Very, very unusual. They close one runway quite often on Sat and early morn Sunday for repairs to the piers. Keep in mind that both runways at LGA require special maintenance!

Usually though, rwy 31 is used as a single rwy ops. Been based out of LGA for two years, never landed on 13 and only saw it happen one day.

Second rarest site at LGA: takeoffs off Rwy 22.

Very true, but I did it once in a DL 757. We rotated maybe 1000' past the intersection of 13-31. Simply amazing. About the weird pattern for 31, I noticed that the other day too on www4.passur.com/lga.html. I have only ever seen planes do the Expressway visual to 31 with a hard left turn aorund Shea Stadium. I have never witnessed aircraft on a long, straight-in final to 31.

Hmm, interesting. Looks like they were using 13 for landings, not 31 as some said above.

I've flown into LGA for years (albeit not too often), and yet a few months ago was my first time ever landing on 31...It was a very weird approach with lots of turns. I also took off on 31 for the first time ever a few weeks ago.

Do they land/takeoff on 31 somewhat regularly?

Quoting JFKLGANYC (Reply 9):
takeoffs off Rwy 22.

That would be interesting!! You've seen them do this though?

I think in actual numbers this may be number one.

Are you sure? I was tracking the flights into LGA on flightaware.com and I saw planes flying parallel to 13, making a 180 degree right turn and then landing on 31.
