From http://www.abtn.co.uk
BIRMINGHAM is to be linked non-stop to Doha from 26 March with Qatar Airways offering a four times per week service. Doha, capital of the Gulf area state of Qatar, is a major hub for much of the Middle East and for many destinations on the Indian subcontinent.

Hey GKirk !!

You just made my day !!!!!

This is great news for BHX... ive slowly come to terms with the fact that BHX will never be as big as MAN but any new airlines and routes is most excellent !

How will Emirates react I wonder ?? and I wonder if this will affect Jets decision to fly to BHX ..

Hold your horses...Qatar's communications office in Doha, and its PR office in London, have both denied this story today. Not sure what's going on, but they're claiming there's no plan to serve BHX.

Thats what they would say isnt it !...
Im thinking they would want to wait to make a bigger more flamboyant announcement... still I may be wrong and if thats the case I will go home a crushed man.... haha

as has been said: hmmmm interesting.

I would imagine they'll need to announce it soon if they are starting flights 26th March. Doesn't leave much time for ticket sales.

to be quite honest I can see them delaying the start up date but starting the route non the less...

Qatar Airways to acquire 60 Airbus A350s
13 June 2005

Qatar Airways has decided to acquire 60 Airbus A350s, becoming the largest customer to date for the new airliner and the first client in the Middle East. The deal is for a mix of A350-800s and larger A350-900s.

Deliveries of Qatar Airways’ Airbus A350-800s are due to begin in the third quarter of 2010, with those of its A350-900s starting several months later.

“We see ourselves as a leader in passenger comfort and service, building on the benefits of a modern and economical fleet, and are thus very excited about leading the way with the new Airbus A350,” says Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al-Baker. “And with the new Airbus A350 sharing the same cockpit type-rating as the A330s that we fly today, modernising our fleet will be a very simple step.”

“Qatar Airways’ attention to passenger service is legendary, so we are delighted to have it as a launch customer for the new Airbus A350,” says Airbus President and CEO Noël Forgeard. “We take great pride of our partnership with Qatar Airways which dates back to its inception. As Qatar Airways has evolved into a world class airline, our partnership has grown and prospered, and is now set to continue into the future with our latest aircraft.”

Qatar Airways is the largest all-Airbus operator in the Middle East and one of the world’s leading airlines, with a fleet that comprises aircraft from the A320, A300/A310 and A330/A340 families. It is also a customer for the 21st Century flagship, the A380.

Qatar Airways will use the A350-800s and –900s to complement its A330s and A340s on regional and long-haul routes, respectively. Envisaged non-stop routes from Qatar Airways’ Doha base include New York and Melbourne for the A350-800s, and Johannesburg, Manilla and Tokyo for its A350-900s.

With up to 60 per cent of weight-saving new advanced materials, in the form of carbonfibre wings and an aluminium-lithium fuselage, the Airbus A350 will be lighter per seat - and hence more economical. This design, together with centralised maintenance and extended check intervals, will also help to give the Airbus A350 attractive maintenance costs.

If the CEO's quote is genuine (and it seems to be) then I'm sure Qatar will be announcing a BHX service as per the story. I just find it amazing that neither of their press offices (which are usually on the ball) seems to have known that Al Baker has said this.

I have my doubts about this. On their website www.flyqatar.com they always have the latest destinations to be offered, and the new ones for march are already being marketed (HKG daily is the only new destination for March). Mind you, EY haven't even started selling their summer routes yet so anything is possible. Good luck with BHX. Could this be another GF story in the making?

Matt

I hope its not another GF story too !! I remember as ive said before GF were looking at BHX before EK came and claimed it...sadly not even GFTraveller made it...  Sad
Im optimistic but I think BHX needs to try and woo airlines from different markets such as Africa (Egyptair/Kenyan) and the far east (China especially)

Is there a big chinese community in Birmingham that would use this service, or big business links?

Yes there is.. maybe not as large as the Indian community but there is enough to warrant maybe a 3 - 4 times weekly service to Beijing or the Canton region...

Im thinking Air China or China Eastern...777 service.

I know it sounds wishfull thinking but I really do think the Indian subcontinent connections are overly exploited.
and with the (hopefully) introduction of QR then I think we'll see some cuts for some other airline serving the region from BHX.
A year round link to Canada even would be wise too, especially by AC.

hahahahaha I SO CANNOT BELIEVE I FORGOT THAT !!!!
hahaha... ohhhh Im so tired.

Well yeah thats a good point but without any disrespect to AI 's product, I think AC would probably clean a lot of their traffic up.
Theirs a lot of people in the area that have family out their and I think a service to YYZ with a 767 would do the job.
