If the Star Alliance is supposed to have the best airlines, why have US Airways? Their service is nothing like United First....the products are just so different...or does that matter.

Umm... OK, so US Airways may not have the best F-cabin service in the world, but that hardly makes it unworthy of *A. Heck, United's international service looks like Ryanair in comparison to, say, Singapore Airlines.
USAir A321 service now departing for SFO with fuel stops in CAK, COS and RNO. Enjoy your flight.

This is sort of like asking why SkyTeam includes Delta. The reason is because large airlines like Delta and US are the backbone of the world alliances.
As for quality, both Delta and US will probably improve in coming years.
