How Much Time To Connect At JFK?

A friend and I will be connecting through JFK from Chicago next month to an international flight. We'd like to take DL 5465 ORD-JFK, but it's scheduled to arrive at 4:30 P.M. and our flight to Europe is scheduled to depart at 5:30 P.M. First, assuming both flights are on time, is an hour enough time to connect to an international flight at JFK?

Second, what are the chances that the ORD-JFK flight will arrive on time? Is JFK delay-prone around 4:30 P.M. on Fridays? Is it possible to check the on-time statistics of a specific flight number?

We'd much rather be early than late, but the only other nonstop ORD-JFK leaves at 6:45 A.M. and would leave us at JFK for eight hours, which for obvious reasons we want to avoid. We could always connect through CVG or ATL, of course, because we don't want to miss our flight, but for the sake of convenience we'd like to take the direct afternoon flight, as long as it's not too risky.

Even if you make it, your checked baggage won't.

What airline are you flying from JFK-Europe on?

We won't have any checked bags. We're also flying DL to Europe.

Depends if there is bad weather...On a normal day though, you should be fine...JFK doesn't get really busy with takeoffs until 6:30ish.

If he is flying Delta, as he said he is, he will be fine.

Those RJ flights exist almost 100% for connecting pax, so don't worry, you will make it. Where in Europe are you going?

We're going to ATH.

I checked Delta.com and if you try to book ORD-ATH it will let you book on 5465 getting in to JFK at 4:30 for the 5:30 departure, which makes me feel better. Of course, if you have a confirmed reservation, DL has at least some obligation to get you there if the delay is their own fault. We're non-revving, so it's up to us to make the connections work.

I've connected on international flights with about 30-minute intervals so it's possible and the luggage arrived without any delays. However that was in HEL flying AY.

On the other note, I wouldn't schedule such a short interval on your return trip. When coming back to the US, you'd have go through immigration on your arrival into JFK (considering you're traveling the same route). After that you'd have to claim your luggage and go through customs. Only then you'd go to check in for your domestic flight. So keep this in mind when booking your return flight. Otherwise on the way there, there shouldn't be any problems because you should get checked in all the way to ATH in ORD.

Leo.

if you booked it on one record locater (i.e-one transaction) then you should be fine....it gets a bit dicey if you purchased two separate tickets....

usually most air carriers recommend 2 hours.....but there is nothing set in stone about that......

I can't find the connection offered in Apollo or on Delta.com as a through ticket.

Apollo shows the legal connection as 1hr 15mins.

I would not risk it personally given the possibility of delay out of ORD.

Agreed. I'm booked DFW-JFK-BRU-NBO with a record locator but I still took an earlier flight to JFK just in case. I've tried the two ticket and even two airports in the past, such as DFW-LGW-LHR-NBO, and that can cause a worry or two if delayed by the airline or the ground transportation.
