So Now What For Iran Air.....

With sanctions backed by the U.N. Security Council looming, how is Iran Air going to be able to renew it's fleet? I know it is much needed.

This has likely been a sure order for Airbus, but with the break-down in talks over Iran's nuclear enrichment efforts, even France, Germany and Russia seem to stand firm should a trade embargo be put into place to stop this country from pursuing these efforts.

How many years of service are still left in this airline's fleet? Would Iran Air's fleet be able to harbor yet another political crisis that could go on for several years?

Call me crazy, but with all of these Neuclear "Negociations" with Russia, I wouldnt be suprised if they decided to go for the IL-96 or the TU-204... after all, the new president and "Papa" Putin seem to be getting along fine.

I couldn't even see "Papa" Putin comfortable with this new president in office. I guess President Putin must have been surprised by the outcome of the recent Iranian election. He hates the dominance of fundamentalism of any kind.

I do, and this is fundamentalism that Putin can tolerate well......as long as you keep religion out of it.

It will still be very difficult, given a uniform trade embargo against Iran, for Russia to sell them anything that can fly or that has any western component in it.

Well, to be honest... with the past dealings of some Eastern European Countries, I wouldnt be suprised if either a "National" airline or maybe the government itself in Russia would place an order... and the plane mysteriously dissappears... :wishful thinking:

Honestly....how long can this airline's fleet keep on flying? It is older than the hills. If I was responsible for the safety of airlines operating in and out of Europe, I would have serious concerns giving this right to Iran Air.

Sure, they have not had any accidents (at least not in Europe). But should Iran once again become isolated, and maybe for several years, the day will come when their oldest 747 will simply say "I'm tired and I can't take this for anylonger". Then what?

Unfortunately, they'll just have to make do for the moment; getting aircraft from the Russians might have to be an option, although if there are sanctions, air routes might be one of the targets, with Iran Air flights to Europe being hit.

However, since many flights between Europe and India and the M/E fly over Iran, they would need to be careful.

Ultimately, the nuclear deadlock will have to be broken by Israel, although in some ways that's likely only to play into the hands of the mullahs and the hardliners like Ahmadinejad.

The sad thing for Iran is that the end to this crisis will have to come about as a result of their actions and that doesn't seem likely; there is a huge young population in Iran and they've been largely turned off politics by the recent elections. However, with fundamentalism obstructing many of the new "freedoms" (or tolerated transgressions), they can only be pushed so far.

An isolated Iran will see poverty grow and unrest with it; one can only repress so far or chant so loudly; sooner or later, reality has to dawn. Iran Air will only recover to its (very considerable potential) when the current leadership has been flushed away. That can only happen with bloodshed and that is probably not imminent, so really, it will be quite some years before IR gets anywhere. It may well have to consider Ilyushins and Tupolevs in the meantime.

Back around 2000 or so I flew into Hamburg. I remember an Iran Air 747. It seemed small, and I wondered if it was a 747SP. Anyone know?

My first trip to Asia was on a UAL 747SP (SFO-HKG), and it had a galley down the right side of the plane making the second cabin (business class) only one sided with windows. Strange layout.

You likely spotted their 747SP. Not sure if this aircraft is airworthy anylonger. Should it be, I am sure Iran Air will squeeze maximum utilization out of it like it will with the rest of its classic equipment.
