American Airlines will be adding mainly seasonal frequencies between Miami and the Caribbean and Central America this summer. The TGU flights have been added every summer, the rest are new.

+3w to Puerto Plata (Total: 10x weekly) 16Jun06-05Sep06

AA 961 MIA 1020-1214 POP TuFrSu 757
AA 964 POP 1458-1610 MIA TuFrSu 757

+4 weekly to Santiago, DO (Total: 11x weekly) 03Apr06-05Sep06

AA 717 MIA 1230-1429 STI xMoTuWe 738
AA 718 STI 1534-1752 MIA xMoTuWe 738

+4 weekly to Kingston, Jamaica (Total: 25x weekly) 03Apr06-05Sep06

AA 2119 MIA 1849-1927 KIN xThFrSa 738
AA 2110 KIN 0856-1143 MIA xThFrSa 738

+4 weekly to Tegucigalpa, Honduras (Total: 11x weekly) 15Jun06-04Sep06
AA 947 MIA 1020-1038 TGU xTuFrSu 757
AA 948 TGU 1153-1610 MIA xTuFrSu 757

Also, previously mentioned...
+7 weekly to San Juan, Puerto Rico (Total: 64x weekly) 03Apr06-05Sep06

AA 365 MIA 2320-0143 SJU Daily 757
AA 1150 SJU 0917-1200 MIA Daily 757

In addition, Providenciales, which recently went to 19x weekly, will return to 3x daily year-round on 03Apr06. And Washington Dulles, which was previously 1x daily during the summer and 2x daily during the winter, will go 2x daily year-round, with a daily American Eagle ERJ-140 being added in addition to the daily 757 on 03Apr06.

San Salvador will be temporarily reduced from 12x weekly 738 to 7x weekly AB6 between 03Apr06-05Sep06, at which point it is slated to become 14x weekly (7x AB6/7x 738).

Also, American Airlines will suspend New York City/JFK-Puerto Plata flights on 29Apr06. AA has successfully served this route for years, but the addition of Santiago to their network has huge effects on traffic (STI and POP are 24 miles apart). The suspension is indefinite, but I'd bet it will be back for next winter.

Also MAR will be upgraded to 757, BOG will operate 2 AB3, PTY will operate 2 757.

And MGA , the AB3 will do a turn, instead of an overnight.

Nice changes.

On a side note, the RDU-LGW summer downgrade to a 763 seems to be gone and it now stands as a 777 year round. And the flight doesn't appear to be eliminated. AA must have decided teh subsidies was still good enough.

It will stay a 777, but the flight is still "under review". I doubt it will be suspended, though.

I had always wondered why JFK-POP lost so much service, after STI was added. Is the airport in STI relatively new?

Any news on the return of ANU, GND and CZM?

Also heard that AA was looking at VLN again with the CCS bridge out. Is this true or just wishful thinking?

CZM was supposed to launch in February. Pulled before launch because of Wilma. As long as tourism picks up again, it will probably launch in winter 06/07. I haven't heard anything of GND/ANU lately, but ANU is more likely. BQN looks like it may be the next new Caribbean city from MIA.

It's true, but the not-very-USA-friendly Venezuelan government will likely not award AA the route rights in protest of Venezuela being a Cat. II nation.

STI is a private airport opened in 2002 and serves the whole central region of the island.
Before, most people traveling to POP (government run) were actually going to the central region of the island (Cibao region) but POP also served the tourist areas of the north coast.
STI has become increansly important to the central region and most VFR avoid POP. But i am still surprised that JFK-POP was dropped because it is still an important tourist zone (used to be 1st, now 2nd to PUJ). Maybe running a 738 nonstop JFK-POP would have worked in addition to the MIA-POP.
