There was a website that the airport company had which detailed the plans and progress of developments at AKL. I haven't been able to locate it? Does someone else know if it is still up?

It is really nice. It feels kind of empty to a degree on the upper level, and the lounges down below aren't necessarily big enough to allow everyone to be seated for a full 744 flight.
There of course are all the duty free shops that were there before. Once you clear immigration and security you basically walk through the typical jazzy mall that are in airports. Then you go up some stairs and it is very relaxed with restaurants and newstands and such. It feels rather quiet up there.
I like it as it is calm. Once you go down to the gate level, then you feel the typical airport crowds and mess, but at least you can get away from it for a bit.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

I'm actually sitting in the AKL international terminal right now!
I have to say it's pretty nice - calm, quiet, nice light and good views of the apron. The usual shops etc are there. The gate areas seem pretty comfortable and well laid out.
Overall it's a *very* relaxing experience compared to the 7th circle of hell that is LAX Terminal 2 which I am just about to head to (and then to LHR...).

Have a good trip. It is a long way. T2 at LAX sucks when you are exhausted after a long flight, but it is still nicer than TBIT. Thankfully NZ opened up service to SFO which has an amazing beautiful new international terminal with a great Red Carpet Club.

Here's the website but I couldn't find anything on it?http://www.auckland-airport.co.nz/index.php
I was at the new upper deck in November 2005 and just last week, February 2006. Gradually it is being fine-tuned and filled-in as an environment. Very nice generally; good views of aircraft but not as good for viewing runway activity as departure area at MEL. Still seems to be only one dedicated coffee shop. If you are flying the Tasman econ on NZ you need to have a meal first, and in that case it is advisable to try the good meal options in the air terminal proper, not in the much more limited departure area.

Quoting Mattlancs (Thread starter): what is the new level of aucklands international terminal like, any one have any photos or anything?
Here are some pics taken at AKL international departure terminal on Saturday last, 4-2-6, at around 1650. They are mainly of the three EK planes that leave AKL daily for AUS within a two hour period in the late afternoon. Quite a group! The A345 (my plane for the day) is EK407 to MEL @ 1850 and then DXB. The nearest B777 (300ER?) is EK419 for SYD @ 1700, then to BKK and DXB. The B777 (version?) on the tarmac is EK433 leaving to SYD @ 1815, then SG, and on to DXB. In one pic there is also a Cathay Pacific Airbus.
Here are 3 photos:
(ps: I hope they are viewable! I have not posted pics before!)
