I was driving towards Midway last week and noticed something unusual on the approaching Southwest 737.
I saw that the landing lights were blinking/alternating. From what I saw of this plane approaching from the South, the light on the left side of the plane, where the fuselage meets the wing was on; simultaneously the landing light on the right side of the belly of the plane was on.
Moments later it switched. The light on the right side of the plane, where the fuselage meets the wing was on; simultaneously the landing light on the left side of the belly of the plane was on.
They alternated until I lost sight of the plane (it turned West for the final approach).

Accurate for some of their aircraft not sure how many. Also some business jets have them installed for just the reason it caught your eye........they got your attention and helps other aviators see you in the air easier!
