I just read on AOL business news that Northwest is speeding up the replacement of its 727,s. They have arranged to take delivery of 3 A319's and 2 A320's in 2001 instead of 2002, and 5 757's in 2001 instead of 2004. All 31 727's will be gone by 2004. I've flown on Northwest 727's twice this year and I like them, they look new inside and out. I'll miss them when they are gone.

What happens to the third officers on the NWA 727's? Are they all qualified to be second officers? Indeed, unless a 727 is flying on a given day, are those thirds given the option to fly as other crew on 2 officer airliners?

I'm pretty sure second officers will become first officers on 319 or 320 or 757. Maybe, first officers DC-9 or MD-80 for a while. I'm sure NWA do not layoff all of it's second officers. Same idea Delta's second officer L1011 and 727's move to 737-800, 757, 767, 777 and MD88.
There are so many captains will be retire in a few years and so first officer will jump to become captain.

I'm glad the second officers will not suffer from NWA getting rid of the 727's in its fleet. I sure will miss seeing those old dogs in passenger service. They sure conger up a lot of memories.
