Hello to All,

Can anyone tell me how strong of a presence Eastern Air Lines had in Chicago, particularly in the 1980's? Same basic stuff as my other two forums.

Did they have any non-stops form here? If so, where and how many?

Did they have crew based here?

What kinds of Airplanes served Chicago?

What Gates did they use?

I am still working on my project and all of this will be very helpful.

I'll give exact flight listings later when i'm home going through my timetable collection, but EA had a major operation in ORD for a long time. Flights were similar to Delta's to major southeastern cities, although EA also had some flights to the Northeast from Chicago as well. Also in 1986 and 1987, EA used ORD as a late night connecting hub for the moonlight express flights.

EA was in the D terminal across the hall from NW. Their ticket counter was next to NW on the left side as looking towards the counters, l to r you had EA, NW, BN.

I remember that their departure lounges were much nicer than NW's. NW had those plastic kind of molded chairs that you often see today, with padded seat bottoms, and no carpeting while EA had purple carpeting, purple and blue upholstered seating and even curtains ala BN in their departure lounges. And being right across from NW, it was a stark difference. Look right, plain jane, look left, luxury.

I remember seeing lots of 727's, DC-9's of all kinds, L-1011's I even flew on one SJU-ATL-ORD in 1973. They may have flown the DC-8 to ORD in the 60's, but I don't recall ever seeing one of EA's at ORD. They flew in the A300 on the Moonlight Express offer. I flew one IAH-ORD around 1986 or so.

I seem to remember flights to Louisville, Evansville, IND, ATL, MIA, FLL, SJU, MSY and the Carolinas. Also of note, when they restarted MDW back up in 1968, EA had a few (2 or 3) flights a day out of there. Unfortuantely, I don't remember where they went. Maybe the Carolinas?

Service on EA at this time was still great. Those F/A's were amongst the freindliest!

I recall they used D3, D5, D7, and D9A - D9B. Flying on EA to MCO in the early 1980's was a real treat. They had both 72S and AB3's on the route.

They also had widebody L10's going to MIA and ATL.

Yes, they had a res center in Oakbrook (I believe), which closed in 1988.

Yes it was at IAH, but then Texas Air moved it to ORD and left it there for about a year before disbanding the operation. EA had carved a nice niche with the IAH Moonlight Express, but of course Lorenzo didn't want the competetion for CO. MCI would have been a logical choice since the weather delays would not have been as bad, but for some reason even though KC was a EA hub they never moved the moonlight express there.

There was a Chicago FA Base until the end, I believe. The base had been closed to new hires and transfers since the 70s hence it was quite senior. There were probably a few hundred FAs based there throughout the 80s.

ORD was actually the hub for the Moonlight Special program. If you are not familiar with it, here's a recap.
EA used their A300's for late-night cargo ops, selling the belly space to CF Air Freight. They sold reduced fare pax tickets on these flights with the stipulation that pax could bring carry-on luggage only. The operation did not last very long - CF didn't have enough cargo to fill all the planes, and EA ended up selling container positions to other forwarders. I believe the program ended when CF Air merged with Emery and hence had their own freighter fleet. It may have been discontinued earlier though........
