What was the timetable for the Delta Flights to BKK and did they go through HKG or TPE? Was it an L15 or M11?

I have not been able to find any photos of DL presence in BKK except some few shots of the MD-11 arriving HKG

They once had an GTO in the Patpong area.

It went through ICN and was MD11. Unclear on the exact arrival and depature time with the connection, hope this helps!

I saw an old ad somewhere about BKK-TPE-USA on Delta showing the tail of an L-1011-500 in a thai magazine, but it must have been something else. maybe it was some mix with SQ? when SQ once had its agreement with DL.

So I guess it was only through ICN, Id assume it was a night flight and crack of dawn departure, so we probably never can find photos from that time period  Sad

I got some extra info. I ran upon this snippet from another site

"Delta was one of the airlines targeted in the failed Operation Bojinka plot: the conspirators planned to bomb a Delta MD-11 flying from Seoul to Bangkok via Taipei on January 21, 1995."


it seems the plane went ICN-TPE-BKK then?

At one time DL planned an Asian connecting hub in TPE but it was aborted. Those were the good old days when Delta really made a push in Asia. After beginning Bombay and Delhi service in 1991, I had hoped DL would try a round the world flight, but alas they never did. It seems besides the Indian market, Delta has no interest in Asia whatsoever. Perhaps if they got China rights, that would kindle some interest, but right now it seems to be just a battle for market share on US-India routes and a flight to Tokyo that is an afterthought because any respectable airline must fly to NRT!

US Airways? darn I guess they are not respectable cause they dont fly to NRT or even Asia?


I like the sound of a TPE connection hub, it would have been cheaper to operate and easier to get slots as compared to NRT? right


DL use to be like AA in Japan, with exception of FUK. and the LAX/JFK/ATL/PDX routes to Japan.

The BKK flights were routed most of the time as:
PDX-SEL-TPE-BKK (p.s. it wasn't ICN then; it was still Seoul Kimpo Airport)

The HKG flights started out as LAX-ANC-HKG with the L1011-500s before going nonstop LAX-HKG when the MD11 came on the scene.

I believe DL flew PDX-FUK for a short while in 1998/99.

HKG flights were routed LAX-ANC-HKG. I think at the very end they may have been nonstop from LAX, but maybe not.

It's interesting to note the dismantling of DL's pacific operation had coincided with the DL's abandonment of west coast flying almost entirely.

I've heard some rumours of Delta returning to DXB...nothing official though. I'd assume Asia for right now is going to be mostly done through partners...Delta doesn't really have the planes to do much more expansion in Asia...the 777s are pretty highly-used right now, only a few of them are available (not counting the potential ATL-DKR-JNB route...) and BJS is on the horizon for 2008.

I'm guessing not -- it's 400 miles farther than the longest route I can think of (AMS-IAH), and unlike that route, there's a lot fewer alternates (i.e., you are over the Pacific).

I flew DL between BKK-USA several times. It started with L1011, BKK-TPE-SEL-PDX. The time was almost the same as all others airlines operate flights between Thailand and USA. Departs BKK early in the morning (around 6-7am, I remembered being at the airport at 4am for check in).The return flight arrives BKK around 11pm to midnight.

When the MD11 came, DL flew both BKK-TPE-SEL-PDX and BKK-TPE-PDX for awhile until SEL stop was dropped and couple years later, all Asian cities, except NRT, were cancelled all together.

Do to range issues (headwinds) didn't the MD11 force DL to often stop in TPE for refueling when doing LAX-HKG?

DL has never served ICN. Its former Seoul flights served the old SEL Kimpo airport.

I don't remember exactly how those flights were. I took DL 50/59 L1011 (BKK-TPE-SEL-PDX vv) only once back in early 90s. And I think 3 times on MD-11 but I do remember flight 55/56 (BKK-TPE-PDX vv) on MD 11 that TPE-BKK section were so empty that almost all passengers could lie down on the middle 5-seat section. I was like a full bed (I guess you can call it a lie-flat bed back then). I was able to do that twice. Outbound flighs from BKK were always full almost full though.

Well honestly I have only been to SEL (Kimpo) never been to ICN yet.
