I was just wondering if anyone here has info on the soon-to-be-launched A330-100. I know SQ and LH are going to be the most likely launch customers, but are there any more interesting bits?

There is! ILFC is rumoured to place an order for up to 30 A330-100, maybe already this week in Farnborough. In addition Airbus plans two versions of this aircraft, one for long-haul flights and one with an increased capacity.

Given that there are a LOT of A300B's and A310's that are in need of replacement soon, it's small wonder why Airbus has gotten a lot of interest in this new plane.
Like I said originally, SQ is looking for a replacement for their A310-300 fleet, LH is also looking at an A300/A310 replacement, and ILFC is looking for a plane it can lease to airlines that need long-range service but don't want to pay for owning the plane. Don't be surprised if there are up to 70 outstanding orders for the A330-100 by the end of the Farnborough Air Show.

When we take potential orders from charter carriers like Hapag-Lloyd into consideration your guess of up to 70 orders for the A330-100 might become reality. And having ILFC, LH and SIA as launch customers is the best thing a manufactur can have...

Last weeks edition of Flight International had a very good report about the A330-100. Airbus will indeed offer different versions with different range and payload.

But will A330-100 be too small to be efficient enough? (Efficiency decreases with decreasing load, my physics' still here). Or are they taking advantage of the similarity between all A330/A340 variants, so that the need for crew training is not as "desperate" (as in the case of A318).
