Aer Lingus To SFO In 2007

According to a press release in the Sunday Business Post, Aer Lingus would like to operate daily flights into SFO pending an open skies agreement between the EU and the US. The article states that SFO is the strongest market it would like to offer service to and is to be their first city in their expansion plans if the bilateral agreement can be reached.

The Mayor of S.F. was in Ireland a few months back and I confirmed with a friend that at a meeting with Aer Lingus, the Mayor was told that SFO would be started after finalizing the EU/US open skies agreement. I suppose they will use the A330s on order to start the daily service. Here is a link to the story.

Awesome news! I feel that the more Euro carriers we see at SFO the better. Especially one with as nice colors as Aer Lingus. Can't wait to see the flying shamrock over SFO. Doesn't SF have the only Irish consulate west of Chicago? Hopefully, we see some new carriers coming in like Vietnam Airways, Emirates, Thai, or my personal favorite because of my background, Alitalia. Great news for SFO though. First QF, now EI.

Walsh made statements about SFO and several other American cities over 18 months ago, but I am still waiting for SFO-DUB. Could you point to a web site that has this press release? I question it as if you go to the Aerlingus press releases, they only talk about buying two airplanes on Feb 9.

I agree SFO is the strongest candidate for EI service, but I really doubt that it will happen given that the LAX DUB route is only three times a week. They could better use the airplane somewhere else.

Thanks for the link -- Sounds like they are looking at Walsh's old plans. However, there is a lot more going on. In another thread, there are people swearing it will be MIA and SFO. I suspect EI is just looking at all their options and we will find out what they decide in a year or so. My bet is on Africa, SE Asia and Austrialia, as those markets are not served by EI at all and there is a big Irish interest in all three areas. You might see more feeders in America, with AA.

I don't expect to see EI ever flying to Australia, but Asia is certainly an option; I would expect HKG to be the No1 possibility, but BKK as No2. HKG is ideal, being the CX hub and EI could feed traffic to/from that network, which covers many important areas.

CPT is also a strong possibility, but an Asian destination will be first; CPT is primarily tourist and it also has a disadvantage from a scheduling viewpoint.

I think SFO will be the first of the new destinations, with either DFW or MIA (a deal being done between AA and EI, so that they both codeshare on the two, but one operates it) and then BWI and PHL. Remember that their initial allocation is three, but from 2008, when there's complete Open Skies, they can fly where they want.

FLYACYYZ, yes, that stupid, inane and obstructive regulation (and I could much more besides, but to avoid cross emails from moderators, I'll stop there!) is on its way out. Unfortunately, it's still in place with Canada. I've been lobbying hard to get it reviewed, but the Irish govt aren't known for moving quickly (or voluntarily) on aviation matters, so it's going to be "pitchfork mode" again. However, we will see Open Skies with Canada within the next two-three years and then, Ireland will be available to everyone from YYZ, YUL, YVR, YEG and all the other wise ...

Pretty much me thinking, except I do see DUB-BKK-MEL. Lots of relatives in MEL, me lad. Maybe not for a few years, but it is a possibility.

I agree that SFO is on the top of EI new direct flight in the USA wish list, but I am not holding my breath on it. It will be sometime. I think MIA will be a code share deal with AA doing the flying to JFK. That gives EI a few more pax at no cost and sweetens the other deals EI and AA have.

As for DFW, it makes sence, because it would give EI a gateway in to the southern half of the country. Lots of business there, and they could partner with AA for that. Just look at the AA routes in the area.

In short, you really have to look at AA as EI's extension in the US. I seriously doubt EI will go anywhere in the US without talking it over with AA. DUB-SFO will probably help AA, given their regional net in the west.

As for AA flying to DUB, well that was not nice was it? I missed that, but when you have 10 or so airplanes, you can only smile at them and say, "Póg mo thóin," but under one's breath. EI really does need AA in North America. Maybe later ...

But if they can use AA to maximize the US market, that gives them the opportunity to use a few of those airplanes to open Asia, which I think is a far better deal for EI.
