MHT 2005 Numbers And 2006 Outlook

2005 KMHT had a record year in terms of passengers and cargo. In 2005 4,329,478 passengers used MHT and 8.1% increase over 2004. Southwest Airline carried nearly 2,000,000 passengers to and from MHT for an 18.6% increase over 2004. While UPS,FedEX and DHL handled 155,000,000 of cargo in 2005. Although rumors are plentiful. I have heard from a few Delta people that the MD80's may return for the summer on the MHT-ATL route. Although a rumors of Airtran begining service here continue to be mentioned. Personally I would welcome Airtran to serve the MHT-ATL market. However I think the markets waiting for service are MHT-DEN and MHT-PHX. I would love to see Frontier enter the MHT market,although more likely WN and WN entering the MHT-PHX market. FLL or MIA could be a successful weekend service from MHT and RSW(Red Sox spring home) could work seasonally. Just my thoughts to keep MHT growing in 2006.

Here's my annual MHT Outlook:

WN - Ok, I've been saying this now for about 3 years. This is the year - for PHX service. By Fall, I would expect a daily 737-700 heading out to Arizona. Don't really foresee much more expansion from WN here though this year.
DL - I expect that the morning ATL departure/evening ATL arrival will come back as either a 737-200 or an MD-88, with 3x CRJ/CR7 supplementing this. CVG will stay 1x CRJ/2x CR7 or so.
NW - Don't see much change - 4x Airbus/DC-9 to DTW, 1x CRJ to MSP. Maybe adding back the morning MSP departure.
CO - No change here - 1x mainline to EWR/3x ERJ to EWR, 4x ERJ to CLE.
UA - No change to IAD. I'd expect one of the current CR7s to ORD to maybe become a 737/32S.
US - I'd expect to see a 3rd daily to CLT with an E90. I'd expect to see some more mainline to PHL (only 2 mainline now).
AC - no change

Now, the big question - what happens to the DH gate?
FL - Decent chance of entering - probably would be 717s to ATL, MCO, FLL.
F9 - I don't see them in MHT right now...especially if WN enters MHT-PHX.
B6 - Too many other cities ahead of MHT right now.
NK - They've had some success in PVD. FLL would be a hit, RSW could work.
AA - I'd love it, but MHT's not going to go out and woo them.

I think MHT got on AA's bad side with their public comments on the wright amendment. That being said, this is one of the largest markets not served by AA and I don't know how much longer they can afford to ignore it.

I agree with DeltAirlines to an extent. I believe US or WN have to consider adding mainline service between MHT-PIT. Flew it numerous times on US flights were always heavily booked. UA may want to consider 1 mainline flight between MHT-IAD (perhaps with a flight which could connect with UA'S European destinations. DEN and PHX are the two new destinations that I think could be successful from MHT

I'm gonna have to disagree there...

I can see F9 entering MHT or PVD because right now they have no service to New England, and with WN entering DEN, F9 is going to be forced to launch an offensive.

As for B6, I've said it before, and I'll repeat it here. Neeleman has said publicly that he would like to get into MHT-JFK. He has said it publicly! How much more confirmation do people need? I'd expect to see the 190 in MHT within the next 2 years.

The Wright Ammendment comment on the MHT web site was great. It was a way for MHT to say 'Thanks' to a carrier that has invested there while tweaking a carrier that hasn't (and won't).

Getting on someone's 'bad side' presumes that there is a 'good side.' AA is one of THE most predatory airlines out there, legendary for starting service in markets ONLY as a retaliatory strike at new carriers. They are well known for coming into a market, driving out whatever competition exists, and then leaving themselves. Who would want that at ANY airport, never mind our own?

AA came to MHT twice, and left twice. I don't think MHT officials give two hoots about AA anyway, so what's the downside to tweaking them on the web site? AA's arch-enemy, Southwest, rules the roost at MHT. And even if AA showed some interest in MHT, their reputation precedes them. This time, MHT officials would be dictating to AA...not the other way around. AA is nowhere near the 'Belle of the Ball' they supposedly were several years ago. Now, as for the much healthier carriers like Frontier or AirTran...each would get 'red carpet' treatment from MHT officials. And between those two, I'd venture to guess that AirTran has a much better chance of coming here than Frontier. JetBlue eventually will be here, but like an earlier poster said: They've got growing pains right now, and too many other dots on the map to invest in (Portland, Maine, for one).

The high-level message is that MHT will see (I think) its first-ever down year in 2006 since the new terminal opened in 1994. Of course, that's more about the health of the airlines than about the health of MHT. As the industry slowly shows stability--and it will--MHT will bounce back. In the same way that I believe 2005-->2006 will be down, I firmly believe 2006-->2007 will be up...strongly.

I know two people who would be thrilled about FL service to MHT- my parents! Not only are they sick of driving down from Bristol, NH to pick me up on my long BOS layovers, but they could nonrev out of MHT, too (1 hr drive vs. 2 hr drive).

I have been lurking here for about five years and finally sprang for a Premium Membership... I though it would be appropriate for a post on my home state of New Hampshire. Live Free or Die!
