With ANA launching this new variant, is SWA a likely candidate for the ER version ?

I don't think WN has a need for the 737-700ER. Their standard 737-700's can fly nonstop between SEA and MIA if they had to.

I think more likely candidates for the 737-700ER would be AQ, WJ, AS, QF, FJ, Polynesian, Copa, AM, CO Micronesia. I'm sure the list goes on.

That's just my 2 cents.

In my opinion, doubtful.

I think the plane would have an awful CASM for long haul routes. I think the idea of a LCC flying a fleet of 737ER's to Europe or whatnot seems appealing, but I have my doubts.

Fly Delta jets. Ride Amtrak trains.

no. Southwest does not need the range of the ER. They have no business class, and the whole idea behind the -700ER is to have a plane with mostly or all business class going on routes too thin to support something larger.

I was just thinking the same...

I'm not sure if SWA would need the 700ER, the 700's can manage coast to coast flights currently  Smile

The only reason they could use the 700ER's is for Int'l flights  Smile

I'm thinking low cost flights to Europe  Wink  cloudnine

Personally, I seriously doubt it.

A closer look at the Boing's PR on the -700ER shows that the range increase is accomplished by use of aux fuel tanks. These things take up cargo bin space, leaving less for baggage and freight. It wouldn't make much sense to have a 137-seat aircraft that can fly the longer distance but has bag/freight limitations, or restrict the number of passengers on a -700ER and create a new sub-fleet in the process.

More likely (IMHO) is that they'll either opts for a -900ER, or wait until Boeing 787-izes a new 737-sized family of aircraft...

Carelessness and overconfidence are usually far more dangerous than deliberately accepted risks.

If WN decides to upgrade capacity on an aircraft, I think they would go for the 738's. I don't see WN purchasing 739ER's or 787's.
