Anybody know specifically why El Al ferried a 747 from EWR-JFK tonight? Which earlier flight was messed up that resulted in this?

Thanks.

Perhaps JFK is less affected by the weather than EWR? I realize JFK is nuts as it is, but the wider configuration and longer runways should help

I would say they needed the jet at JFK to establish an outbound flight. It was not needed at EWR as those passengers would be re-accommodated on another flight, or take today's outbound.

Flight 007 from TLV to JFK was diverted to EWR, so the a/c (4X-ELS) flew later on to JFK to fly its scheduled route JFK - TLV (as flight LY002).

Dam. LY7 didn't land at JFK until past 1AM depsite having been scheduled to leave EWR at 6:15 PM...And LY2 didn't take off until 7AM...What a night.

Did the same crew that diverted to EWR fly the recovery to JFK?

Any idea how far the plane had to fly in order to take off and then establish an approach to JFK?

EWR as those passengers would be re-accommodated on another flight

if this were to happen, CO84 and CO90 are the winner!
But Amirs reply make the most accurate.

Amirs is right.

My uncle was on that flight on his way to BOS.

He took the morning flight to JFK and they were diverted to EWR instead.
He was taken then to Boston by a car.

LY ferried later on that day the a/c (ELS) to JFK.

Mike

Just put your cursor over the abbreviation. The airport pops up.

Cool feature huh?  Smile

I would guess so if he was unable to get a connecting flight. Probably a lot faster to take the Thruway to the Pike as opposed to waiting for an EWR-BOS flight the next day.

KRK pops up but YMX doesn't. BTW, YMX is Montreal-Mirabel

If I remember correctly, LY flies to both EWR and JFK from TLV. Why? Isn't it better to concentrate the operations to one airport?

Many airlines fly to both airports. The NYC market is large enough to fly many flights to both and still do well at both airports. Very few comparable situations....

SKA340 yes LY fly to both airports. EWR is very convenient for people who live in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. JFK is quite a long schlep for them. Many airlines fly from both airports like LX, AF, LH, BA, AZ, KL and VS.

SKA340, unusual situation, other posts explain dense traffic. Last time I flew TLV-EWR 2 years ago, I almost missed it b/c I got there 2 hours before flight time (that's cutting it close for LY anywhere), even though I was in business class, and there literally over 1,000 people on line for security and check in solely for 3 jumbos to JFK and EWR all leaving 12-1 am.

BTW, really miss SK at JFK. It was cool to first see them at EWR (flew them there once from CPH), but they belong back at Kennedy. Its a matter of tradition.
