I am looking at booking some flights to Rio for early next year. I have been given a good business class fare with Air France. However the aircraft they show on the route is a 744 with no first class. Does this mean that it would be the older style business class without the flat bed seat?

Quoting HB-IWC (Reply 1): Air France operates the B744 in a 2-class configuration with the new business class to Rio de Janeiro.
Right, the CDG-GIG was one of the first flights to get the new NEV business class with lie flat seats. Also AF vip lounge in Rio is the first one to get on NEV (even ahead of CDG).
There are some rumors about an additional A332 service 3x weekly starting on november, not confirmed yet, but it's really necessary as this flight last year get a 94,5% average load, probably one of the biggest worldwide.
Nice trip to Rio !
New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

Quoting FlySSC (Reply 3): The B744 used to GIG have a configuration of 40J/393Y.
They are fitted with the new seats in Business and Economy Class
I confirm the above. AF's B747 CDG-GIG are configurated with the new business class. I took this flight on business in September/05 and last month.
AF does not have First Class to GIG.
AF's new business configuration is really good, especially if you seat in the mini-front cabin rows 1 to 4 (usually fitted with First Class on 3-class services) which has seat lay-out as follows:
2 x 2
2 x 2
2 x 2
2 x 1 x 2
The small front-cabin is really private. You even have the option of a single independent seat.
The second cabin, also fitted with business has a different standard configuration on 2 x 3 x 2.
All in all, AF's GIG has a top business configuration and a good service; the service has improved, e.g. recently they replaced those horrible plastic glasses with original glassware. Menu also improved with more options.
