CRJs, indeed. One can only hope that advanced booking will be so good that DL will upgrade those flights to a 738, which would be more capable to handle all the cargo that these routes will likely generate.

Well Carnival, AA, Pan Am 2 have come and gone since Eastern stopped flying into PSE . Currently we have Continental to EWR and JetBlue to JFK, starting in June we will have flights to ATL. Considering its a twice weekly flight maybe they will be able to pull it off, BQN I might see it in the long run maybe upgrading to a 737-800 not PSE though. Most of the passengers on these flights will be connecting from the Northeast and Florida so as long as fares remain competitive the flight will remain.

These flights won't last long, IMO. It has less to do with the customer comfort factor, and more to do with cargo and the large amount of baggage Puerto Rican customers take with them.

American will probably be returning to BQN this summer, around the time Delta launches. It still isn't confirmed, but look for a daily each to MIA (738) and JFK (757).

I said about this, 2 weeks ago.  old

ATLANTA, Feb. 16, 2006 – Continuing the largest expansion to the Caribbean in its history, Delta Air Lines will expand to three the number of non-stop destinations served on one of the Caribbean’s most enchanting islands with the addition of service to Aguadilla and Ponce, Puerto Rico, effective June 1. Delta Connection carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines will operate the new service between Atlanta and Aguadilla four-times weekly and between Atlanta and Ponce twice-weekly, supplementing Delta’s extensive schedule of flights offered daily between San Juan and Atlanta, New York-JFK and Orlando.
“Delta is pleased to expand our customers’ options for travel to one of the most preferred island destinations in the Caribbean with the addition of non-stop service between Atlanta and Aguadilla and Ponce,” said Bob Cortelyou, Delta’s vice president of Network Planning. “Puerto Rico has long been one of our customers’ favorite destinations and we are certain that customers will find the welcome as warm and the attractions as enchanting on the island’s northwest and southern coasts as they have in San Juan for more than 50 years.”

Delta’s new non-stop service* between Atlanta and Ponce, effective June 3: Flight Departs Arrives Operates
4927 Atlanta at 11 a.m. Ponce at 2:38 p.m. Wed., Sat.
4927 Ponce at 3:25 p.m. Atlanta at 7:09 p.m. Wed., Sat.

*Operated by Delta Connection carrier ASA

I agree, but I consider it a market test. If advance bookings are good it may never fly as a CR7.

It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

That honour goes to another Delta Connection flight between Atlanta and a domestic Caribbean airport, St. Croix.

I stand corrected. This route doesn't stand a chance. The vast majority of Puerto Ricans are afraid to fly on turboprops and regional jets. That's probably why AE left my home airport, MAZ. And the timings are absurd. The flights leave ATL midmorning meaning to connect from say BOS, JFK, or DCA, you would have to leave pretty damn early in the morning. And on the way back, u would arrive farily late at night. Delta should forget about PSE, and concentrate on making BQN work with 737 or a 757. As for MAZ, it would nice if we had some RJ service to San Juan or even Miami. Though I doubt Miami is feasible. Does anyone know what the BFL is for a CR7 on a 90 deg. day? I'm too lazy to look up to drag polars and calculate it.

Most late model ERJs and CRJs should have no problem doing MIA-MAZ.

Ah, MAZ. It's my home airport, too. Well, it's the closest to me, anyway.

While Eagle left, the airport has 5 Cape Air dailys to San Juan which is fine. I do wish the TSA were still operating there, though, so you wouldn't have to go through security in San Juan when connecting. (Having to exit the terminal in San Juan and climb the stairs outside in the heat is annoying.)

MIA-MAZ on an RJs? Can RJs take off and land on a 4,998-foot runway? (Probably a very stupid question.)

Kimmykun, not a stupid question at all! It's all a question of aircraft weight and density, as well as built in safety factors. All things being equal, the balanced field length is inversely proportional to the density^2. That makes a huge difference especially on a typical hot Mayaguez afternoon. The weight also makes a huge difference and can reduce/increase the ground roll substantially. It would be intersting to explore the feasibility of of operating MAZ-MIA, though like i said earlier, most Puerto Ricans would not fly an RJ all the way to MIA plus as someone said earlier, the baggage restrictions, would be a killer to most Puerto Ricans, whom as you know don't exactly like to travel light!

BTW, estudias en la Inter?

MAZ-MIA would probably be feasable if BQN weren't so close, though I'm sure there are many southwesteners and mayagüezanos who would much rather use MAZ than BQN if the service existed.

According to the news, though, the Ports Authority's evaluating MAZ's future on whether to close it or not. We'll see, I suppose.

Yep, el Poli, er, Inter.
