Praful Patel has cleared Jet Airways to start ATQ-London flights. I'm assuming they will be at LHR if they have the slots.

It also seems as if AIX is planning ATQ-Middle East flights as well.

All in all good news for the people of Amritsar and North India!

It seems to me like just about any route between India and the UK would be successful. I hope to fly Jet someday, I've heard such good things. I wish them the best of luck.

good!! so I presume it'll start when they get their own A333s in May(correct me if I am wrong). BTW! Which of the two airports are closer to Indian populated areas? With 9W already flying to LHR, I presume they'll be reluctant to flying to LGW

cheers!!

That's exactly why i think they'll stick with LHR. It's good news for those living in N.America as well, now possibly a decent connection can be made to ATQ. I live in Chicago, and unfortunetly there is no ORD-BHX flight.

I'm assuming the route will be DEL-ATQ-London.

I could see them flying to LHR for a few reasons:

1) They already have service set up to LHR
2) The Indian population is spread throughout places such as Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hounslow, and Redbridge; Pakistani population throughout Redbridge, Newham, and Waltham Forest. These are all over the city, and thus don't have one specific airport which is closer to Indian or Pakistani communities
3) As the average income of Indian and Pakistani communities is lower than ethnically British communities, LHR has easy and cheap (Tube) connections, as opposed to LGW which doesn't have the Tube.

Hopefully, If Jet joins Star Alliance, a UA ORD-LHR flight, and then a 9W LHR-ATQ flight would be perfect for me!

Personally I'd prefer it joining Skyteam, as it had big big gap between Italy(Alitalia) and Korea(Korean Air), whereas Star Alliance is pretty much there, TG & SQ.

The average income of a Pakistani maybe lower than an ethnic UK white but the average income of an Indian is higher than an ethnic UK white.

As per this study:

Ethnic group Mean hourly earning in UK pounds
White: 9.50
Mixed: 8.52
Asian: 8.91
Indian: 9.92
Pakistani/Bangladeshi: 7.10
British Black: 9.04
African: 8.92
Carribean: 9.29
Chinese: 10.75

An airplane might disappoint any pilot but it'll never surprise a good one.

How is the airport at ATQ? I see it's way up in the north of India. Is hot/high performance an issue, or is terrain a problem?

I still know very little about India, but ATQ is definitely one of the areas I'd want to visit. Has Jet delved into the tour package market yet?

Interesting, the study I found showed otherwise. My apologies.

The airport is relatively small, but is undergoing major expansion. The city is in the Punjab region, which is actually a flat area that is considered to be the breadbasket of India (producing 60% of India's grain).

Just a question.... does this mean 9W's ATQ-BHX plans are out?

Great! When are they starting?

I hope some day an airline starts international operations from Chandigarh (IXC). Amritsar is just too far west (IMO).

Plus, Chandigarh is way better than Amritsar in terms of travel and tourism.

= Are you serious? SKY is a disaster. Trust me on it. An airline of 9Ws stature and international aspirations belong to Star.

Actually, it's A332s that Jet will be getting.

Are they being delivered that soon? I was wondering what they might be using on the route; it would be great to see a 9W A332 coming into LHR!

9W had acquired 3 pairs of landing and take-off slots at LHR last year. Also, thru the S2 acquisition they may gain one or two additional pair of slots @ LHR. Now if they plan a double-daily BOM-LHR from Summer 06 and keep the daily DEL-LHR, then I believe they must be banking on using S2's LHR slots to mount DEL-ATQ-LHR this summer?

Also will 9W's DEL-ATQ-LHR flights be counted as DEL-LHR or ATQ-LHR round-trips?

As per revised India-UK bi-lateral, Indian flag carriers are still restricted on the number of DEL/BOM-LHR flights while they can have an "unlimited" number to/from any other point in India to the UK.

According to the BBC and the Office of National Statistics, the Indian population makes up 2% of the British population, but accounts for about 10% of economic output!
British Indians are incredibly successful - very wealthy!

Incidently, this is great news - Panjabi Londoners have been crying out for direct services between LHR and ATQ. Also, if 9W time their service to provide onward connections to Canada,US (perhaps codeshare with BA/UA/AC.... - maybe they will codeshare with BA considering the fact that BA had signed an agreement with S2 to codeshare on some India flights?) the flight will do very well. Though to be honest, the London community on its own could be more than enough to keep flights to ATQ going.

This is the only photo I could find of ATQ's new terminal - it is about 12-18 months old, so the terminal should be taking shape:

For those of you who don't know, Amritsar is famous for the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine for the Sikh people:

While IXC would defiently generate more business traffic, tourism no way. Amritsar would generate alot more tourism/economy traffic (Golden Temple).

This is excellent news! We need more point-to-point flights like these, given that DEL/BOM are hopeless as hubs. I wonder what routes IT would like to deploy their A380s on, or they may possibly trade those in for more A350 type aircraft (which would be more suitable for point-to-point flights).

Jet should consider a AMD-LHR service. BTW, how is AI's AMD-LHR(originating in BOM or via BOM?) faring?
