BOWIE, Md. -- Two people are dead and another is in critical condition after a small plane crashed Wednesday morning in a field in Prince George's County.
The crash was reported at about 10 a.m. in a field along Church Road south of Route 50 near Freeway Airport in Bowie. Prince George's County Fire and Rescue spokesman Mark Brady said the single-engine Cessna 172 either opted not to land or was told by the airport to choose another facility when it went down.
Officials believe that a total of three people were on board the plane. Two were pronounced dead at the scene. The third person, an adult female passenger, was transported to a local hospital. The survivor was found in the back seat of the plane.
Brady said visibility at the time of the crash was between zero and 500 feet. News4 meteorologist Tom Kierein said there was a rain-snow mix and fog in that area at the time of the crash.
Brady said the victims have been identified, but their names were not being released pending notification of next of kin.
This is just down Route 50 from where I live. Route 50 is backed up from the airport all the way into Annapolis because of this, at least 15-20 miles! Current temps are in the mid-30's and it's been a mix of snow/rain all morning.
