Youngest Age To Be A Pilot W/ Commercial Airline?

As it states....how young can a pilot be to fly with a commercial airline, lets say Sabena, Swissair, or any other major in the US etc.
Please try to be as detalied as you can...

Isn't it discriminatory to have an age limit for employment? I think that would be illegal.

It may be 17 in the UK. I heard Virgin had a few 17 year old cruise pilots, same at BA. Maybe it's 18, or maybe a cruise pilot can be a CPL. Imagine being flightcrew on a 747-400 or A340 at that age.

PS, I went to put 'cedarjet' in the Username field but I was still thinking about those kids getting to play with 747s and I accidentally typed 'bastards' instead.

C172sb - the only jobs that (legally) require an ATP are captain's positions. If you are hired by an airline at age 18, the age requirement (23) for an ATP can be waived if the company wants you to upgrade to captain.

This is in response to JETPILOT's question as to whether it is illegal to have a minimum age for a pilot position.

In a classic legal answer, it depends. Age is a protected category under federal law (the ADEA), but the proection only applies to those over 40. Many states tailor their anti-discriminatory employment practices statutes to model the federal statute, but many others (including Iowa, Washington D.C., Oregon) cover workers from age 18 on.

Remember, the age discrimination in employment statutes only say that you cannot not hire someone on the basis of age (or race, sex, disability, national origin, etc.) if they are otherwise qualified for the position. As such, if I can establish that an applicant's age makes him unqualified for a pilot position because of lack of experience (or any other reason), it would be quite permissible to not hire that person.

The general rule is that if an individual's membership in a protected class makes him or her unqualified for a position, an employer can chose to not hire this person based on membership in that class.

In two years, I'll be charging $400 and hour for this information, so you're lucky you get it for free now.

Here in Hong Kong, we are now required to have ATPLs. As a second officer I was also required to have one, albeit frozen at this stage. For all those F/Os and S/Os that didn't have ATPLs, they were told that if they did an upgrade, or a change in fleet (Basically any position change) they were required to sit the ATPL exams as well. I know of F/Os who had been with the company, not having studied textbooks for years suddenly required to sit HK ATPLs (Very hard) when Cathay sold the classics and they had to upgrade. Not all got through and jobs have been lost.

In Hong Kong I believe you have to be 18 to fly for an airline. The youngest pilot we have here is 21 I believe. I am third youngest in our company at 23.

Hi there, as a junior F/O for Sabena, I will try to solve this question for you.

To start as a F/O at Sabena, you need to have a valid Begian (or JAA -> European) CPL/ME/IFR license with a frozen ATPL.
To obtain a valid JAA CPL/ME/IFR you have to be 18 years old.
A frozen ATPL means you have done the theory, but still lacks the required 2000 hrs. of flying experience needed under Belgian law to receive the ATPL (as from the age of 21 years.)
So, the required age to become a F/O on B737, BAe146 or A320 is 18 years at Sabena!
I can assure you there are quite some guys (and girls) from 20 or 21 flying in the right seat of these planes, including myself (21 years old).

As pilots, we in Europe have the benefit that mayor airlines do not require huge flying experiences like in the United States. Since flying a big jet is very different then flying VFR in a Cessna, there is no real benifit in having 3000 or 4000 hrs on General Aviation machines. I really do not know why Delta, American, United etc. don't want to hire pilots having (only) 300 to 400 hrs in their logbook...
All mayor companies in Europe (Lufthansa, KLM, Sabena, British Airways, ...) do it. You can hardly say that they have an unsafe reputation, can you?

I've joined Sabena via the Sabena Flight Academy at the age of 20 years with only 350 hours in my logbook!

If you come from outside the Sabenagroup (i.e. if you haven't learned to fly at the Sabena Flight Academy) you need something like 4OO hrs or so, with an certain increment for every year above your 25th birthday.

Are you thinking of joining?
Keep in mind that we require you to speak/write the national languages of Belgium. This means French, but also Dutch and German... Add the usual English to this and you see, you immediately have a list of at least 2 languages to work on if you aren't born/raised in Belgium or Luxembourg...
That's mainly the reason why we have very few foreigners flying at Sabena.
