Does Fleet Commonality Matter In Alliances?

I've read in Flight International that Alitalia was considering getting 747-400's in part, because KLM flies them. In other words Alitalia wants more fleet commonality with KLM. Does fleet commonality matter in alliances? In my opinion it does not with regards to attracting passengers provided that planes are of similar quality, age, comfort, maintained, etc. However, there may be some benefits in reduced costs if the airlines share maintenece. What do you think?

In most cases I believe that fleet commonality is NOT the deciding factor in the way that airlines pick an alliance...it has more to do with the way that they can effectively share a route structure that would benefit all parties involved. However some airlines do provide maintenance for code-share partners to reduce costs as you said (e.g. American and Hawaiian is the most obvious...look at the DC-10's).
