I did a search and couldn't find any answers - I am wondering if anyone knows what sort of routes Convair CV-880s were used on back in the '60s. Transcon? Medium haul? Did TWA use them for any int'l routes?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

TW also flew them between DTW and SFO.

Reportedly Some of TW's 880's were prewired at the factory for high frequency radio installation for overseas use, but I don't believe any were used outside of North America.

For what its worth, in some ancient home movies, back in '62, my grandpa took a return flight home from what is now BWI then BAL to MIA on a Northeast Convair 880. The movies were taken from BWI (BAL) now defunct outdoor observation deck. Movie quality sucked as to the fact, my dad and other loved ones were not known for their Oscar talent camera work. And, you had to flip the film. Go figure!

Most of the DL 880's I flew on were between ATL and Florida destinations. I do remember a few trips between ATL and ORD (including my last 880 trip). I also remember a trip to LAS.

What great airplanes,man.  thumbsup

I remember as a teenager in the mid-60s sitting on Fort Lauderdale Beach and every day at 1155am see the one daily departure of a Northeast Airlines
Convair 880 take off for JFK. There was only one other Jet departure a day of any other airline, believe it was an Eastern Boeing 720, can't recall where
it would leave for.

Have great memory of my Dad taking me to the Fort Lauderdale Airport
one evening to see the NE Convair 880 come in from JFK. After all passengers debarked, I asked gate agent if I could take a tour of the plane. He gladly obliged. Those who remember NE Convair 880's will recall there was a forward first class lounge. That evening the gate agent invited me to sit in that
lounge and proceeded to serve me 3 leftover first class steak dinners that
had not been consumed on the flight!

Can you imagine that happening today!

On occassion TWA would substitute one for a B727 on the ORD-MCI-AMA-ABQ-PHX-LAX route. A real treat!

Thanks for all your reminiscences!

So it seems that no US carriers used them for int'l/transborder flights - although what about AA?

AA did not fly the 880s, they had 990s.

Possibly, NE flew the 880 BOS-YUL but I am not sure about that. Besides the mentioned carriers, the other 880 clients were AS, VA, KL SR CX and JL

Thank you - I knew that (I swear!  Smile ) but I should have specified in my question.

If anyone knows about AA cv-990 transborder routes I'd love to hear it, and if anyone can confirm about the NE YUL - BOS 880 flight that would be great!

My very first jet flight was on a TWA 880 IDL/STL/TUL/OKC continuing onto LAX. That was my first visit to start an education at the University of Oklahoma in September of 1961. Finally swapped out to a 707 the following year. I still have the ticket jacket, flight 167, September 9th, 1961 IDL/OKC seat 23A, ETD 3:45 p.m. Total cost $85.36 including tax. Those were the days.
