I know that PAN AM had routes to Delhi out of LHR but did they fly a 747-200 or any other aircraft on the route? With TWA where in India did they fly to and was it out of JFK? Did TWA had a stop at LHR before continuing on to India? I would also like to know on What aircraft did TWA service routes in and out of India to Europe and the US with?

Pan Am used to serve BOM and DEL out of FRA using 747s. TWA served BOM from LHR, but this service was transferred to Singapore Airlines. I don't think SQ still flies this route.

Pam Am flew to Bombay from Frankfurt, usually with a 747-100 as well as
to Delhi. For a time, the Delhi flight operated DEL-Karachi-Frankfurt-JFK.
This was flight 73, and it was hijacked back in the 1980's for a few days.

Trans World Airlines flew the route via London Heathrow but I do not think
it was as successful as Pan Am's operations.

Today, Delta flies to Bombay via Frankfurt, with a 767-300 or an MD-11.
United was operating round the world flights, LAX-JFK-LHR-DEL-HKG-LAX
and suspended the service in 1998 due to the Asian financial downturn.
The LHR-DEL flights were operating with a 767-300ER. United is resuming
the route in November 2000, this time operating it as LAX-IAD-LHR-DEL-

United had also wanted to fly ORD-DEL nonstop, with a 747-400, but it
thought the route was too long to fly and therefore not feasible.

TWA flew the L1011 JFK-LHR-India for a couple years when the L1011 was brand new. They probably used the 741 aftre that.

life wasn't worth the balance, or the crumpled paper it was written on

PanAm initially only served Delhi (and briefly Calcutta) in the 1960s with a 707 as part of their round the world flights. TWA did the same for Bombay with a 707. The PA 707s stopped in LHR on their way to DEL; the TWA 707s stopped in Rome and Paris. In the 1970s, PanAm served Delhi with a 747-200, and then began services to Bombay with 747-200s and 747SPs. The 742s flew Bom/dxb/ist/fra/jfk and the SPs flew to the US via a stop in the MidEast. PA also began services to the West Coast from Bom and DEL via HKG using a 747-200. In the 1980s they consolidated their services to India as terminator services - daily to India (Bom and Del on alternate days) via FRA and DXB and/or KHI, and later just via FRA. When PA went kaput, Delta bought the routes and now serves BOM daily with a 767-300 via Frankfurt. UA flew twice daily 763s into Del via LHR or HKG, but suspended their services last year. THey are starting again this fall using a 744 via LHR.

I thought TWA flew to Mumbai very briefly. Also, it was my understanding that TWA served Bombay from some Middle Eastern city. I am thinking it was Kuwait City maybe. I don't remember the moperating nonstop from London but I could be wrong.
