There's an awesome new concorde photo circulating on the new showing the plane taking off with the engine (landing gear also??) on fire. I think that photographer ought to get the photo of the year award!
I mean, how often do you get to photograph a plane that's about to crash!!!!

I was just sitting here looking at an enlarged version of that photo before I read your posting. On close inspection of the photo it seems as though the flames are indeed coming out of the gear bay - not the number two engine - at least initially. It seems quite plausible that the blown tire may have sent tire/rim debris into the gear bay area, puncturing a wing tank and/or fuel lines. Either way, ingestion of the flames, or severed fuel lines would certainly seem like a logical explanation for the loss of power to the affected engines. I agree with you on that photo....it should give the investigators a wonderful tool in determining the cause of this accident....and help them take steps to ensure it never happens again.
