Airline Timetable

First post here... Searching for it I couldn't find a discussion regarding it so my question is, Other than Southwest, do any US (or even European for that matter) carriers still publish a printed timetable? I know that most of them have gone away after the 9/11 cost cuttings but they were such a great reference, it's a shame they have all but gone away.

The only US carrier still printing a timetable is Southwest. AirTran and Delta printed them until Fall 2004. Now nobody except WN does. As someone who HATES online/downloadable timetables with a passion, it's sad to see a small convenient booklet get replaced with a giant PDF file. Give me a paper schedule any day!

Fortunately just about every major European, Asian and Middle Eastern airline still offers a paper timetable. Lufthansa just beefed up their timetable after slimming it down a few years ago - they brought back aircraft seat plans and started listing aircraft types on every route again.

Often times, airline staff will tell you they don't offer paper timetables because they're too lazy or can't be bothered to go get one. British Airways prints a limited number of timetables each season but only offers them to their frequent fliers. Only occasionally will you find a BA ticket desk that has them available to everyone (Brussels had them out a few years back.) El Al and Air India also like to tell people they don't print timetables, when in fact they still publish very informative and nicely printed schedules. The Air-India timetable is HUGE (and actually pretty difficult to decipher).

It's much easier to make a list of non-US carriers who DON'T offer a printed timetable:

Qantas (still offer smaller schedules for Japan)
Air New Zealand (still offer smaller schedules for Japan)
Virgin Blue
Aer Lingus
KLM
SAS (they still print regional and domestic timetables for Norway/Sweden)
Air Canada
Ryanair
easyJet
TAP Portugal (still prints destination timetables for the UK/Brazil, but no systemwide schedule)
BWIA

The other big exception is South/Central America - Varig, TAM, Aerolineas Argentinas, Avianca, TACA and Copa don't make timetables anymore. In Mexico, Aeromexico, Mexicana, Aviacsa and Aero California still offer timetables, as does Air Jamaica (very small pocket booklets).

African airlines can be rather hit or miss as well. South African Airways and Ethiopian Airlines publish a full system timetable, but Kenya Airways just offers a small pocket fold-out schedule. I've also got current Winter 2005/2006 timetables from Air Burkina, Air Madagascar, and Air Senegal, so they are still floating around out there.

BA's was always a favorite as I was collecting them growing up. Good to know they are still around. Will have to put in some effort in getting one...

Another item that may be going by the wayside is printed Airport timetables. When I was at CVG last month waiting for a connecting flight, I picked up a CVG timetable booklet. On the front cover of the booklet, it listed that this quarter (Jan. 2006) would be the last edition of the printed timetable.

Interestingly, in Europe almost every airport still prints a timetable - even large airports like Frankfurt, Paris and Berlin. The only folks who don't are the London airports.

PHL still produces a printed timetable booklet. While it's certainly no ORD nor JFK, I wouldn't exactly place PHL in the middle-tier airports category.

As far as the constant schedule changes is concerned, that's been the main argument against printing the timetable booklets. I've noticed that FL (as an example) in 2006 alone has produced 2 PDF timetables compared to just one timetable every 3 months when they were still doing the booklets.

With regards to CVG, inside the booklet; one listed reason for the booklet phase-out in favor of the PDF file is indeed so that it can be updated more frequently (6 times as opposed to 4).

Hi, I can think now, in a hurry, in some that still publish the big one: Air France, Adria, LOT, Spanair, VLM, Swiss, bmi, Aeroflot, SN Brussels, TAROM, Ukraine International, Egyptair, Air Berlin... For the regional/local ones, the scope is much bigger. And for airports, there are many, for instance almost all the Spanish ones and many in Europe. By the way, I have a lot of spare timetables which I would swap. Contact me if interested. Regards

Been through that often with them. You literally have to force your way to the back of an AI ticket office to get a timetable from them.

It's tough to read and really mindboggling that AI hasn't changed their timetable format or font since the early 1990s. Well at least they still publish one unlike all of the US Legacies!
