From the newspaper Portafolio:
http://www.portafolio.com.co/port_se...B-NOTA_INTERIOR_PORTA-2766032.html

SATENA initiates International Process:

Ecuador, Peru, Panama and Venezuela would be its first international destinations.

The airline will invest in 2006, 100 million in technology and infrastructure and fleet modernization to ensure safety to its passengers.

They plan to launch an e-ticket pretty soon (before the end of Q1) and by Q2 a FF program.

The manager said that even though SATENA is an state-owned airline it does not receive any financial aid from the government.

------

Well the reason to create SATENA was to service those parts of the country were the commercial airlines won't go and those are 70% of the routes which in some cases are subsidized in 90% but apparently the other 30% profitable routes are big enough for the company to even grow, invest and now expand to international markets..(Last year SATENA reported 2 million in operational profits)

Your thoughts please...

sounds very intresting!

anyway if Satena starts the international routes, I hope they will start new routes and not jump on the train and operate BOG/MDE/CLO-PTY, BOG-CCS, BOG-UIO/GYE, BOG-LIM as the other carriers.

Thanks Ricardo for the link. Sounds really interesting. I am just wondering what SATENA intends to modernize in it's fleet. They have an absolute state of the art fleet, using the Do328 and ERJ's. The Dornier isn't the most economic aircraft around (we make the joke in Switzerland that all carriers who used it made bankrupt) but it's an excellent perfomer on all the hot, high and short airports around in Colombia. It's also about the only aircraft in it's size that can be used on longer routes as well, as it's pretty fast.

Do you think that they could get more ERJ's mabe even E-Jets? Basically I think it's a great idea if they go international. It will develop direct connections to the neigbourhood counties from secondary airports. As the Bolivar countries have lots of common history and culture I see this as a very positive aspect. Finally in case they look for more Do's, there are a number parked and for sale. Spare parts ins't an issue as the Swiss governement owned RUAG Aerospace bought the type certificates for the Do328 Turboprop.

By the way, going off-topic and speaking about the Do328: Did you know, that former Switzerland based AirEngiadina (RQ, went bankrupt in April 2002) how was the launch customer for the Do328 had a plane with crews in Ecuador for one winter? It was a wet lease to a local company and the plane, which was in full "KLM-Alps" colors by this time flew 3 times daily Quito - Guayaquil. I remember the crews loving it, but having a hard time to get adapted to those rapid changes in altitude, going in 30 minutes from sea level to 9000 feet and right back again.

Cheers

Interesting news indeed! I don't know much about Colombian aviation but when reading all the threads and posts here about Colombian aviation I have a feeling the Colombian aviation will explode over the coming years....!

Nice to read about these expansions. Good luck to SATENA!

hmmm... this is getting a little out of the theoretical Satena radius of action as per their mission, I just hope they don't overexpand.

If the plan works out it'll be marvelous though.

I undertand that is the plan. I cannot remember where I read it, but I recall that Satena wanted 2 additional 145s this year.

I remember reading an article in EL TIEMPO last year, in which SATENA was planning to fly to Jamaica (Kingston if I'm not wrong), with their ERJ-145. They planned to offer as a charter for travel agencies, bc there's no direct service from Colombia, and take advantage of the resort packages offered by the island. Does anyone knows if they ever flew the route?? Tried to look in their website, but couldn't find abything.

Good luck.

Next flights: AV BOG-ADZ-BOG, AV-UA BOG-IAD-ORD-IAD-BOG, BOG-FLL-BOG, LA BOG-MIA-BOG J

I don't know about the Jamaica thing but I know Satena has made eventual charters abroad, they even took the Colombian soccer team to Quito in an ERJ-145 for a match against Ecuador.

They sure did. Both Satena and AeroRepublica have operated charter flights to Jamaica in the recent past.

That's a very good thing to see. More than the new Airplanes to come I'm glad they report operational profits even though they operate those social money losing routes and have had some problems in the past like the high Dornier leasing problem and the gradual dwindling of goverment help.

Things are doing great for Colombian airlines those days... lets hope they keep that way.

Which A/C do you think that they have in mind to replace the Do328 and the Casas 212?

I don't think they will replace the Dornier 328, that little sexy Airplane fits them quite good and they're not old. What Airplane would the Dornier be replaced with? I don't see any, taking into account Satena's operations as a whole. In Fact, I heard somewhere a rumour saying they wanted to get some 2 more Dorniers or something so.

As for the CASA 212s, they were already replaced by Let 410s, here's a shameless self-plug about it. The CASA 212s didn't end operations though, they just passed to the Air Force for non-civilian duties.

By the way, as we were talking about Satena I decided to take a look into their website and I found out they changed it. It was a change long overdue but at least it was done!.

Take a look at:
www.satena.com or www.satena.gov.co

Just my being picky...

but, wouldn't a new livery look great? I always think the bird's legs loos odd - sort of catoonish.

Does the ERJ still have "2004" on the engine nacelle? What was the reason for that anyway?

Well the logo was revamped not so many years ago, not too much of a change but they did. Maybe a new livery could come handy but remember they're Air Force... the Colombian Flagged stabilizer and some stuff have to remain.

The 2004 thing on the engine nacelle is no longer there. The reason was the show the year the Aircraft came into service with Satena and to show they have current model new Airplanes as per 2004 year (Satena has the most modern fleet here). A little show-off comes handy once in a while! (ask Richard Branson). It's not there any longer as I said.

Ah. The 2004 thing makes sense now.
The colors on the tail are fine and need to be there because of it being FAC it's true, it's just the bird-thing that gets me...

I don't know.. I kinda like it. It really shows the foundation of SATENA, which is to serve the under served small towns and distant parts of the country.

The Corocora (Red bird) is very typical from the great east plains border with the Colombian Amazon.

I think it's a good livery yet simple. Still it's not that I adore it or something, if they can come with something better it's absolutely ok for me, but I'm not dissatisfied with current one or the logo.

From Satena's webpage

Quote:

For non Spanish speakers, something like:

Satena's Logo

The Satena's logo is encomprised of three elements:
The typography with the company's name, the Corocora, red color bird typical from the Colombian Eastern Plains and the sun divided by the horizon.

The new logosymbol of the company conserves of the initial logosymbol, but has been updated (more modern typography and a more geometrical Corocora) to denote the company's transformation in the last times. The logosymbol elements are composed in such a way that there's optical and stetic balance between the typography and the Corocora, balance that increased its visual impact.

The new logosymbol also has an impact because its colors, yellow, blue and red, are also the national Colombian colors and because it coordinately works with the elements that make the new Visual Identity System.

The bird, the Eastern Plains Corocora, has been geometrized having as a base the former design of it and keeping the position of extended wings in midflight.
