Any info on where will the 737 come from?

Tikal Jets could use 733's (perhaps DL's 733's) on the GUA-LAX/MIA flights. Aviateca used 733's to both cities from GUA before they were absorbed by Grupo Taca and obtained A319's and A320's.

awesome! let's hope this materializes. Shame they don't plant to fly their DC-9s.

I have seen a pic of a Tikal DC-9-50 in a very colorful special scheme (unfortunately it was inside a hangar and only the rear was showing). Does Tikal still have this plane painted like this? Anyone knows where I can find a good pic of it?

If you read the application, the aircraft planned for the carriers service will be leased from and operated by US air carrier as Guatemala is subject to Category-2 restrictions and cannot add new services until it regains Category-1 status.

Laxintl...so there lies the question. Who will the US company with 737's be? Miami Air maybe?

Miami Air, Sun Country, ATA, Pace, Falcon, Ryan Intl all have 737s and could do such ACMI charter work.

Wow...I didn't see this one coming. Tikal Jets service to MIA seemed like it could happen, but the LAX flight came out of Left field totally. I wish it would have been to SFO, but this is good news both for LAX and for Tikal Jets.

I heard something about it a couple of weeks ago. A good friend of mine is a pilot in Guatemala and he flies every day to Honduras and El Salvador. He told me that Tikal was about to get additional aircraft in order to serve new destinations and they were thinking about getting 2nd hand 737s or even a couple of Embraer 170s, but there was the "Cat-2" issue that made the US-operated 737s look like the best option.

Btw this friend of mine could be soon applying for Tikal Jets. I hope he gets his chance.

If/when Tikal Jets is able to operate with their own metal to the US, their DC-9-30's/-50's can easily make the trip between GUA and MIA. IB used to fly their DC-9-30's between MIA and GUA.

However, I don't think their DC-9's can make the trip between GUA-LAX. They'll have to use 737-300 equipment.

Back in the day, did Taca fly 737-200's between San Salvador and LAX through MEX?

According to a friend of mine that works at Tikal, boeing approached them directly and offered 2 737-700, but then again I don't know if they can lease from boeing.

There was an article about Tikal Jets in Airways or Airlines (can't remember) a few months ago. In this article I read that Tikal Jets couldn't apply for U.S. ops. because Guatemala is only has an FAA Cat. I status. So until GUA made improvements, no airline(s) from Guatemala could fly to the U.S.

Actually, each one of the tails of the three DC-9's is painted in a different way. Check these pics:

I see where it could work... This route relies heavily on VFR traffic, since L.A. is the US city with the highest number of Guatemalan immigrants.

nice  Smile thanks. Maybe I remember the wrong thing but the one I saw had color that went to the fuselage, it was mainly red I think. It was a while ago so memory coudl be playing a trick on me

Those Tikal planes look very clean on the outside, hopefully their well maintained as well. Why can't Guatemala be rated CAT 1 by the FAA?

Where does it say that? A few years ago they planned to fly to FLL, but the docket is for MIA-GUA frequencies, not FLL-GUA.

*sigh* Our airport... The current terminal was built in the 60's, and has remained almost the same. The airport is in the middle of the city, with little room for expansion. It has become too small for the traffic it handles; add to it a poor maintenance job and you have the perfect recipe for disaster.

The good news is that GUA is currently undergoing an extreme makeover. The works are supervised by the ICAO, and the first phase of the remodeling is expected to be complete next year. However, I have heard that the airport could be rated CAT 1 only after the second phase is complete (8 more years, I think?) So it will be a long wait... but we never lose our hope.  Smile

I screwed this up! I meant to say that Guatemala does NOT have Cat. I status. Not "is only has," bad grammar and proofreading day! Sorry folks!

Yeah I know but if you go to page 23 it says "The request and approval for the route Guatemala - Fort Lauderdale and viceversa is still pending."

That is a seperate request, one that is not related to this docket. A few years ago they did plan on starting FLL-GUA, but it never went through. Now they plan MIA-GUA instead.
