Big announcement out of Salt Lake City today. Here's the Delta press release:

Delta Air Lines to Serve 100+ Destinations from Salt Lake City with Seven More Non-Stop Destinations from Utah
New service to Aspen, Bellingham, Des Moines, Fargo, Sioux Falls, Toronto, Victoria highlights Delta's next wave of growth; special low fares celebrate new routes

SALT LAKE CITY, March 6, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Delta Air Lines this summer will offer customers even more choices for travel to and from the airline's growing Salt Lake City hub with the addition of seven new non-stop destinations effective June 8. The new destinations -- which will be the only non-stop service offered between Salt Lake City and any of these cities -- are: Aspen/Snowmass, Colo.; Bellingham, Wash.; Des Moines, Iowa; Fargo, N.D.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Service to Aspen/Snowmass and Victoria will be operated seasonally between June 8 and September 2, 2006.

Today, Delta begins its inaugural service to Long Beach, California -- its 99th destination out of Salt Lake and later this week, will initiate service to its 100th destination from Salt Lake City when inaugural service begins to Mazatlan Mexico on Wednesday, March 8. Salt Lake City is Delta's third-largest hub and with Delta's increased presence has become the second-largest hub in the entire Western region.

``Delta is thrilled to be a part of this momentous occasion. Serving our 100th destination out of Salt Lake is certainly something to celebrate, but we're not stopping there,'' said Bob Cortelyou, Delta's vice president of Network Planning. ``We are proud to continue to expand our presence in Salt Lake City with the addition of seven more non-stop routes for our Salt Lake City customers. Since the beginning of 2005, Salt Lake City has become Delta's fastest growing domestic hub in terms of destinations served as customers have responded favorably to a growing line-up of popular new flights from our convenient Mountain West hub to destinations throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.''

Since October, Delta has added or announced new service between Salt Lake City and 21 non-stop destinations, including flights launched last year to leisure and business hot spots such as Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Kona, Hawaii; Hartford, Conn., New York-LaGuardia; Miami, Fla.; and Columbus, Ohio.

To celebrate its newest routes, for a limited time Delta is offering special introductory airfares for travel via Salt Lake City to or from any of the hub's seven new destinations. Tickets must be purchased by March 21, 2006.

I think it must have a lot of YYZ traffic to and from all sorts of western destinations in mind--ie connecting traffic to and from DLs extensive western network out of SLC. Doesn't that also make sense based on the timing of the flights?

I agree the E70 are awesome but I don't think Skywest would like that.  Yeah sure

Since DL seems to be interested in expanding its SLC operations and AM dropped SLC a few months ago, do you think it is reasonably to expect the announcement of a DL SLC-MEX route soon?

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

Some of the routes out of SLC in the past were started as a result of "travel banks", that is guaranteed funds to support the route for a given period of time that usually come from local chamber of commerces or local economic developemnt agencies. I know the SkyWest/DL routes to Eugene and Redmond OR are being funded by this type of arrangement.

I have no knowledge of this, but I would not be surprised to learn that there are "travel banks" funding routes such as Victoria, BC and Fargo, ND.
Perhaps someone could answer this for sure.

The problem with routes like these is that the day the funds agreement expires, the route gets discontinued, unless it truly succeeds on its own merits.

It is new, just started this month. Right now 2 CR7's are flying and 3 more are coming. They currently fly SLC-BZN, GEG, RNO, ONT, and TUS. There is also one flight to JAC on Saturdays.

edited to add JAC.

The SLC-ASE route is major news, and will undoubtedly make the front page of both local papers this week. I kind of had a feeling that this was going to happen after UA got permission to use the CRJ-700 on the DEN-ASE routing. Increased air service into Aspen is always a good thing!

Here's hoping they can take more than 20 PAX per flight.

What I want to know is why DL is making their ASE service summer only? You would think that if they wanted a seasonal Aspen service, they would go during the ski season.

You'd be surprised, there are very strong loads on all carriers that already serve here (United Express/Northwest/Allegiant), all three of them having a very beneficial establishment here. I am sure Delta will be very pleased with the results out of Fargo.

For Fargo, I can't say if this is for sure, but it is very possible. I know some of the state government figures played a large role in pressing for an additional airline service, so it's quite possible. (I remember reading something about it in Fargo's airport admin. meeting minutes.) Even more, the airport also hired a specific agency to work with potential airlines and convince them to consider serving Fargo. We originally had America West (believe it or not) potentially coming, but that was a no go.

I can speak on behalf of Fargo because of my location just being an hour drive away, and thus I stay pretty current with the airport's occurences and meeting minutes. Being I am a new a.netter, I'll be sure to throw a trip report up very soon out of FAR and give you a visual of what's it's like up here!

I don't see where it says ASE is seasonal. That being said, when we found out about this at ZW, some people in the office are still doubtful this will ever happen with United. That being said, once it was revealed that ASE would by on a skywest CR7, it was fairly obvious that DL would be in in a heartbeat.

The question now becomes, when the NW RFP is answered, will the new airlink carrier maintain the ASE service that was provided on the AVRO, would the new pilot agreement allow CR7's, or will NW just pull out of ASE entirely? And might US replace the PHX-ASE Dash-8 with a PSA CR7 instead?

I would think that they did get funds for starting the route. HP was offered money for starting up FAR-PHX but that didnt go through. The money was actually from a federal grant to increase air service, not sure if there was money from state/local agencies as well.

66 SLCUT2777 : You'll be supised at the numbers that make the drive down to GTF or up to YYC to catch a flight to SLC. Perhaps the O&D numbers are there for CRJ ser
67 AvConsultant : Good point. DSM, FAR and FSD will be good routes for DL. These cities have a lot of O&D traffic west. UAL will take a hit in the Dakota's. Either UA
68 MAH4546 : It has nothing to do with this. The US and Canada already had an extensive Open Skies agreement and have for a while. What the new agreement allows i
69 Post contains images SLCUT2777 : AC doen't even serve YQR with mainline service any longer, only Jazz flights on CRJ's. Much of that is that both YQL and YXH are so out of the loop a
70 Post contains images MtnWest1979 : ASA CR7s have replaced OO EMB120s a bit ago. Sorry, RenoAir hasn't been around for awhile. I assume you meant OO. Can't blame a typo, "Q" and "O" are
71 Copaair737 : OO, QQ, same difference. lol. I wasn't aware the CR7s had replaced the EM2s on that route. Well, maybe the EM2 wouldn't be the best bet then on that
72 Dreamflight767 : Are we going to place bets on how long it takes DL to pull out of FAR? Great news, but I'll be impressed when they are here for a while. I wonder how
73 N908AW : Eh...no. 95% of the people flying FAR-SLC would fly it for the sake of connecting somewhere, much harder for NW to fight then a route where 100% of t
74 Post contains images SLCUT2777 : One right after the other up the bankruptcy courthouse steps! But you're right that SLC would offer the FAR passenger more connecting options than LA
75 Dbo861 : DSM has seen a lot of new activity in the last year: -Service to Orlando from Allegiant -Northwest to DCA and LAS were added, as well as an increase i
76 SkyWestFARCS : i just thought i'd put in my 2 cents since i work in fargo, SkyWest will work the flights not NW, most likely we will use gate 4 since it is our prefe
77 MAH4546 : Actually, Northwest's DSM-DCA flight performed very poorly. They upgraded it to an Avro in order to offer a First Class cabin in hopes of improving t
78 UAPremierGuy : They likely will later, but its simply too early to announce that yet. They'll wait closer to the ski season to make that announcement for several re
79 DFORCE1 : Would the Q400 be capable of this? Will someone please refresh me as to what this is? I still can't get my head around the decision to fly into YYJ.
80 Lentigomaligna : Alaska's connections on the west coast are good, but further east and in the midwest, not so much. Still, whether YYJ-SLC will succeed is to be seen.
81 Gunsontheroof : UA has a Seattle hub? It'll be interesting to see how DL service to BLI impacts the QX service to SEA...SLC isn't terribly out of the way for west co
82 SLCUT2777 : Actually they do. Most anyone has a cousin, or relative that is Wasatch Front based. That part of Alberta was settled by Mormon Pioneers during the l
83 Azstar : At one time FAR was served by mainline CO, AA, FL (old) and F9 (new) Frontier flights, but the aircraft were just too large. The RJ's are perfect for
84 Ah414211 : SkyWest has just started to operate the CR7 for Delta Connection--up until March 1 they were all ASA.
85 DFORCE1 : I'm trying to test booking flights on the DL website from YYJ to SLC but nothing is coming up. Has YYJ been added to the DL computer system yet?
86 Post contains images SLCUT2777 : It's probably still a little early. Keep in mind also the flights are only going to run from June to September. $199 (USD) is still pretty steep cons
87 UAPremierGuy : No.
88 SLCUT2777 : Actually today AC announced YYZ to SLC service to compete with DL. This will be AC's first foray into the SLC market. Could an Alaska/DL type codesha
89 MAH4546 : No. The announcement most likely has everything to do with Delta's announcement yesterday, and is to protect marketshare.
90 B4real : This already exists! Whoa! No way, I may get to correct MAH4546 if he is answering SLCUT2777's question. DL does have a codeshare with AS in place at
91 WesternA318 : Didn't Western have SLC-DEN-LGW service with DC-10-30's at one time? Couldnt DL possibly throw a 777 on the route? AC could always use UA's semi-big
92 B4real : No, simply b/c DL has not enough 777 for the next few years. I'm not sure when they will take the next 5 they have on firm order.
93 WesternA318 : By the time the route authority would be passed, they might have one or two more, but im sure they'd increase Asia service from ATL first
94 Post contains images DAL767400ER : I guess SLCUT2777 was referring to DL and AC starting to codeshare on SLC-YYZ , which is obviously not gonna happen.
95 Post contains images MtnWest1979 : Now that is the church to join At least FSD residents will have the DL product Westward again.
96 Iowaman : WOOHOO!! DL has fulfilled my most wanted dreams (CID-ATL, DSM-SLC). Even though they both are only 1x daily I'll take it. Yeah, it was cut not to long
97 MAH4546 : Fargo is a new market for Delta, Des Moines is not. It doesn't make sense to enter a new market like Fargo with one daily flight if you want to build
98 AirTranTUS : On March 13 the CR7 flight TUS-SLC used the "Candler" callsign.
