I assume dark glass as shown in the 2nd link is necessary to cut down heat from the sun inside the concourses. Or is this just what is used when rendering images like this?

All the people probably since it is a very busy airport. International heavies.... probably not . Except maybe around Formula 1 time when we get the international charters.

Is IND a viable international destination for anything bigger than a 787-8? I doubt it. If they built this terminal, however, it could be a really cool reliever airport to ORD.
They are definately building it. Its due to open in 2 years.
With the exception of F1 race time I doubt this city could support anything bigger than a 767 or 787-8. Despite having served 8.5 mil pax last year we don't have a single schedule widebody flight to anywhere.

Looks like a very nice facility. Sort of a modern day Dulles.
However it looks, at least the landside building, a little small. And the building doesn't strike me as something that could be easily expanded if it needed to be. (airside looks like it can grow somewhat) Any idea on how big it is supposed to be?

I have to agree that IND won't likely see anything bigger than a 767 or 787, and that the shot of the 744 in view 2 is just wishful thinking. Good reliever airport for ORD and DTW. Glad DL started direct SLC service there last fall. I've always felt that would be a good direct flight rather than connecting through CVG or ATL.

Quoting Christao17 (Reply 5): Is it me or does the EXT4 picture look like it has some Pan Am B727s in it?
It really does look like a Pan Am 727. There certainly won't be any of those flying to the new airport. The only 727s will be the few the ones operated by Fed Ex unless there is another reincarnation of Pan Am down the line.
Overall though they look like nice pictures. If only they could get that terminal built. It is certainly taking their time. It looks like the terminal land has been flattened for a year with nothing going on. Now compare that to Walmart which can build a building from start to finish in less than 3 months, of course I am not implying that an airport is as easy as a Walmart or that it is run by as efficient people. It still seems like the airport is taking a while. The control tower was built quickly, but of course things don't go by that quickly.

C'mon, it's Indianapolis, the land was flattened by the hand of God eons ago.
That said, as many times as I'm there I never really see much "progress" taking place, it does seem to be a pretty slow pace, but I'm sure alot of the work going on now is stuff like running the utility piping in from the main lines, pouring footers, and so forth.

Don't let the looks fool you. This terminal has twice the square footage of the old one.

We had a couple 747's here last summer for the F1 race. It happens. Just not often.

They have been busy for months with grading work, utilities, etc. They are basically working on the foundation now with major steel work to start this summer. Construction of the parking garage starts next month I believe. This may be where the new tower comes in to play. It may have to be live before the heavy work can start. The frame work and heavy equipment can't obstruct the view of the tower.
There have been a few modifications to the plan including the international arrivals and the baggage claims. It is pretty close to what is being built. It will also outline 2020 expansion & beyond.

Quoting DL Widget Head (Reply 16): Very nice. I like it. The interior renderings remind me of the interior of HAM.
Very good call. When I first looked at that pic you posted I thought to myself "Is that a high quality rendering of the new terminal?" It looks so much like...
