I'm wondring why most DC10/MD11 have 2-5-2 config, and not 3-3-3 in economy. Both will give 9 abreast, but in the 3-3-3 you would not have the bad middle seat in the 2-5-2 config. I'm also wondring why only a few airlones uses 3-4-2 in the it. Yhat will also give 9 abreast seating.

I also hate the silly 2-5-2 configuration. I especially ask myself why some Airlines use this config. in their new aircraft, like for example Malaysia Airlines in their 777. I flew with NW DC10 from DTW back to AMS and sat on the middle seat! It was terrible!

You guys are funny. In 2-5-2 config, the middle seat is two seats away from an aisle, but you have a choice of both aisles and also there is only one seat in each row thus inconvenienced. In 3-3-3, the window seats are both two seats away from the aisle, but you only have one aisle to choose from, so not only is it more inconvenient, but twice as many pax have to suffer (A and J, instead of just E). Do the maths!

The reason i would prefear the 3-3-3 over the 2-5-2 is becaus i like to have a 3-?-3 config and not a 2-?-2 config. You might think i'm crazy but that's the way i like it with three seats near the window

If you don't like the seat, ask not to be seated there. It's that simple. If there would have to be 9 abreast with only two aisles, I would think 3-4-2 is the best simply because there are people like us that will look out the window for 4 hours without having to use the lavatory and inconvenience the others. And with 3-3-3, you have twice as many seats that are 2 away from 1 aisle.

I think that 2-4-3 is the best since like 2-5-2, there is only one seat that is two seats away from the aisle and in the meantime, the person in that seat has the window to look out of. Along with that, it offers flexibility with families of 4 getting the middle seats, couples getting the 2 seats on one side and everyone else getting the rest of the seats. Even if the person in the middle seat on one side of the plane is in between 2 people, he/she is still one seat away from the aisle.
Also, even though I do agree that 3-3-3 can be bad in a way that there are 2 seats per row that are 2 seats away from an aisle, I also agree on the fact that the persons in those seats at the very least have a window to see out of instead of the 2-5-2 config whereas the person smack-dab in the middle of the of the 2-5-2 config can see out of nowhere.

Personally, I prefer Airbus's 2-4-2 configuration. The 747-400 also has a nice 3-4-3, and the 767's 2-3-2 is also nice. I flew on and Air France 777 with a 3-3-3 configuration, and I must say, it seemed more spacious than and MD-11 that had a 2-5-2.

Math doesn't matter, pple hate 2x5x2 becuase it's rediculous that airlines feel they have to sqeeze in that extra seat and it LOOKS crowded. Freaking 5 seats in the middle LOOKS horrible. It makes the plane VISUALLY look more crowded. People see that and go ICK. Dont underestimate the power of psychology and no matter how many times pple give the reasoning that "oh 2x5x2 is better becuase only ONE person per row has to have that middle seat" I'll NEVER think 2x5x2 is okay. I'd rather be in 3x4x3, 3x3x3, 2x4x2 or 2x3x2. It's more comfortable psychologically when you view the cabin.
