Ok I know this is the way the industry is headed, no more hot prime rib carved at your seat, no hot meals at all. But I think that the current BOB snacks are aweful!. I personally think if you upgrade them a bit more and offer things like hot sandwiches and better selection of FRESH snack, you would have higher sales rate and potentially increase revenue! Your opinions?

It's the new buy on board menu from British Airways' subsidiary carrier 'BA Connect'. They are selling things like Full English Breakfast, Pizza, Afternoon Tea, Tortilla Wraps etc.
I suppose at the end of the day its airline food! Make of that what you will  Wink

I paid nearly £5 for a ham and cheese pannini on Ryanair and it was disgusting. Thin, insipid floury loaf with the thinnest layer of low quality cheese and the cheapest ham- hey presto! Why can't airlines offer something decent, at a proper price! I don't know how they can justify £2 for coffee or tea? Bring back complimentary hot meals- airline food is great!

UA's fresh food BOB boxes appear edible but they also have junk food boxes that would probably last a decade in storage and do not have much appeal to anyone over 8 years of age. If you are in the back of the plane, they often sell out, so it is usually best just to pick something up at the airport, if you really need to eat on the plane.

That's the problem - 99% of potential customers will not pay $1 more for a ticket from point A to point B, regardless of what in-flight ammenities the carrier does or does not offer. Unfortunately, I don't see this trend reversing in the forseeable future. I too miss the days of gormet food on 30 minute flights.

I totally agree with you. I understand the cost cutting issues and why airlines do not offer complimentary meals any more. But, the snack boxes that they do offer are just disgusting. Personally, I will be willing to pay money (say $10-$15) for a descent hot meal.

The worst about the disgusting BOB snack boxes is that they have made their way into the international flights too and replaced the pre-landing snacks (to avoid confusion: they are complimentary too, but still desgusting).

First, welcome to a.net! You are mostly right. However, how about being able to choose a hot meal before the flight (say 24-48hrs or at time of reservation) and prepay? That way, the airline can preplan what meals should be loaded on the flight, nothing gets wasted (you've prepaid whether you eat it / turn up) and everyone is happy?

The quality of the meals may vary pretty heavily from airline to airline, but the ones I have had (on HP/US) have all been fairy good. Both in the flavor dept, but also in quality, and quanity. For 5-7 bucks it seems that a large airline catering company should be easily able to provide a decent quality hot or cold sandwich and a snack. You'd pay that much, or more, for something similar at an airport deli/sandwich shop.

I guess we'll just have to see how BA Connect does.  Smile

The way I see it, there are five options:
  • Free decent food
  • Free rubbish, incl. non-perishable
  • BOB rubbish, incl. non-perishable
  • BOB rubbish, incl. non-perishable, and decent food
  • BOB decent food
  • Nothing
For short-haul, I'd settle for 1, 4, 5 or 6 as long as it was clear beforehand which I was getting. Obviously you'd need to be good at estimating demand for the BOB decent food. What I hate is expecting a "meal", as advertised, and getting a tiny dry sandwich.

I tryed the BOB thing on US from LGA/NAS sometime ago and it wasn't too bad, you got a few little bits and bites, but i only tried for trying it sake. To be honest, I don't need anything to eat ona flight up to 2 to 2.5 hours. I have flown endless segments recently on AA just about that flight time, and wasn't hungry and even refused the pretzels on the flights without BOB. On flights over 3 hours, like transcons, i think the airline could at least provide a sandwich, just to taper the hunger a bit until the passenger reaches the destination. YOu can get good food at the airport before you flight, but i find it to be a hassle to carry food on board the aircraft. And sometimes the BOB program doesn't work for the airline cause they may have perishable food and it doesn't sell.

How much does it cost to cater an airplane with a sandwich and bag of chips for every passenger? I know US and AA does that on some caribbean/latin american routes.. It works just fine, so why not do it on the other domestic US flights.

This is not as true as people think. CO builds in the cost into the price of the ticket-about $10 or so, and they're quite a bit more successful than their competitors.

Personally, I refuse to do the BOB on principle. The snacks I've seen look disgusting and charging $5 for that rubbish is a total insult. I'd rather buy something at the airport and bring it onboard. What's interesting is when I do, I've had a few longing glances from FA's as they're trying to sell the snackboxes.

The stuff is on par with decent vending machine food, which I know doesn't sound that appealing, but I'm 18 and will gladly eat whatever's available, and out of a vending machine the contents would be well over $3. I've also had the $5 boxes on HP, which were also fine, but kind of big and I felt too full at the end. Maybe I wasn't hungry.

However I've never flown before 2001, and the closest thing I've gotten to a complimentary meal service has been hot sandwiches on Champion and Sun Country, so maybe I'm naturally inclined to think on-board service these days is just fine. Perhaps as more people fly who haven't had domestic complimentary meals, complaints about this sort of thing will decline.

Although I do have to say that if I ever fly Midwest I'm definitely buying a hot meal!

I too, do the same. I won't buy UA's Snackboxes out of principle, but would consider (and did) buy(ing) the "Fresh Food" offered on longer flights. Tomorrow, I am flying IAD-DEN. I am currently "waitlisted" for an upgrade to Business, which hopefully I'll get, but in the event that the gate agent tells me it is hopeless, I'll be making the trek to Wendy's from the Gate. Always get plenty of jealous looks from fellow passengers and FA's when I pull out a nice, fresh, juicy hamburger, and they are stuck with pretzels and whatever else they throw into those God-awful snackboxes. With that said, though, I'd much rather have a meal served on-board, saves the hassle of carrying all that junk on-board, which is why I'm hopin' to get that upgrade tomorrow...wish me luck!

Admittedly I've only had such snacks as freebies. If the BA Connect stuff is really as good as it looks then I think I'd pay their prices.

And that's probably a large part of the problem for those of us who do remember good in-flight food for "free" (obviously it was always hidden in the price of the ticket).  Sad

US/HP has decent meal selections. The Phoenix Philly is actually very
good. But I would like to pay for them via the airport check-in kiosks.
That way I won't have to deal with the exact change the FAs prefer to
receive on board, plus I can get a receipt for travel expenses.

A lot of American's can't comprehend the difference between flying domestically on U.S. airlines and the better European/Asian carriers like BA. On U.S. airlines, you can buy a small bottle of rot gut for I think $5. On BA, you can purchase 187 ml of Heidsieck Monopole for $14. That's about the adjusted retail price for the entire bottle of a very good french champagne. Of course, we Americans have no one to blame but ourselves. Pretty soon, every (domestic) U.S. carrier will have an on board McDonald's - and that's it.

Song offered cold entrees for sale..wraps, and sandwiches. They were quite good. Did raise a question with the airline about a cold turkey wrap at breakfast time,. wondering if something hot and more in line with breakfast food could be offered. Song noted that the galleys had been removed from its 757's..(guess they kept one for the coffee)

On a 5 hour flight AA don't offer complimentary food/beverages?! Goodness, thought they were one of the flag carriers!

I'm flying soon especially LGW>MAN for one thing, to experience a complimentary hot breakfast on a 40 min flight for the last time, a long out-dated catering option on this short sector it will soon be a panini only service.

I miss the days of hot meals but have accepted times have moved on, however full service carriers not even offering a small snack is below par IMO. Something like BA is starting is just about right, though I will miss those deli boxes.
