Etihad Airways announced three new international destinations to Paris, Dhaka and Casablanca .

Etihad will launch six flights a week to Terminal 2A at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport from 1 June. The new service will offer a total weekly capacity of 1296 seats, and will further boost the cargo capacity into the European market.
The new Dhaka route also follows Etihad Airways' ambitious plans to link Abu Dhabi to the world's most important commercial and cultural centres, and will provide a major service to the 350,000 Bangladeshi nationals based in the UAE.

Etihad will launch four flights a week to Dhaka from 3 May 2006, increasing to five per week from 5 June 2006. The new service will offer a total weekly capacity of 1,465 seats, and 15 tons of cargo, in each direction.

The new Casablanca route will start on 1 July 2006 and will operate four times a week , using A330-200, configured to carry 22 Guests in Pearl Zone and 240 Guests in the Coral Zone.

so from YYZ, EY has excellent twice a week connections with a 2 hr transit in AUH enroute to DAC and 45 minutes on the way back in AUH.

With GF getting out of AUH, nice to see EY taking up the slack, and giving Bangladeshi more option to DAC besides flying BG, one of the worst airlines in the world.

It's been mentioned in this forum before that Emirates hasn't increased frequencies to Paris because of bilateral restriction. If so, how did Etihad manage to get the frequencies?

If this is the case - remember that Etihad is officially the national airline of the United Arab Emirates. Not EK.

This will afford Etihad certain opportunities/priveleges that Emirates can't get.

How did they get that distinction? Isn't UAE nine-different emirates in one? I'm sure the head of Dubai will have something say about this.

Economic politics: A large order for Airbus aircraft. That's how Emirates secured further frequencies into Paris CDG.

Anyways, it does appear that UAE bilaterals are negotiated on a per-emirate basis and not as a whole country which is bizarre...it's as if Abu Dhabi is another country. Can anyone clear this issue once and for all? And why are so many carriers claiming to be the "UAE's national carrier"? They should claim to be 'that particular emirates' home carrier and not 'national'.......

There should be a distinction between 'national carrier' and 'flag carrier'.....a National carrier is one and only...designated by the host government to be the country's official carrier....while a flag carrier is one of many airlines designated by the government to fly international routes....such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, BMI in the UK or American, Delta and Northwest in the US.

Guys i think that Itihad can launch some flight from ABU to USA or Canada with a stop in OSL because OSL is definitely in need of more direct intercontinental flights since SK don't want to move forward

Well , Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE so its carrier should be the national carrier of the country .
I don't think that each Emirate negotiates its own air agreements , there is a kind of ( Federal ) Aviation ministry that takes care of these kinds of Bilateral air agreements .

By the way , Etihad chairman also announced lately in Belin Tourism Bourse ( BTI ) that his Airline will launch a daily non-stop flight to JFK starting in July/2006 . No more details were given .

As far as I am aware, only Etihad have this title. The 'so many carriers' you refer to? Which are they, because there is only Emirates as direct competition, and they have never ever made a claim to be the National Carrier...

I reckon it's negotiated for the UAE as a whole - not on a per-emirate basis. The crunch will come when Etihad want to start flights to places like Tokyo, where due to congestion I believe that National Carriers get preference. Also, it will be interesting to see where Etihad fits into the Australia picture - with EK having all the slots already, and wanting more...

I wouldn't expect to see the 777-300ER on that route. It will get a new-build A332 when more are in the fleet. The second 77W is doing LGW, and the 3rd I believe will be JNB. THe first is currently on FRA, but will move to the Manila route sources tell me...  Wink

Both Air Arabia, and the newly formed RAK Airways, have claimed in press releases to be 'UAE National carriers'.

Aren't they the national carrier of the Emirate they are located in?
