Quoting Humberside (Reply 7): Why the sudden increase in services to Westerland/Sylt. Lufthansa are also starting a large number of flights there this summer
According to the ZDF (German TV) the majority of the Germans will stay in Germany this year for holidays, people would stay 3-5 days (mean). Maybe airlines expect a run to our beaches...
"Why not going to GWT instead of using AB for a short-term-trip to PMI?"
I think this a possible reason.

Quoting A300605R (Reply 10): I can't remember the year (10 years ago or something), but ST had flights with B733 from Berlin (was THF I guess) to HDF.
Yes, that's the route I meant. Sorry for not making myself any clearer.
It's in the LH Europe timetable from June 1 2005, THF-HDF operated by C9. The equipment's not listed, but I think C9 only uses Dashes and Do 328 props out of THF.

On the one hand HLX was very successful with flights to GWT last year, so that's the reason for their increase in flights. I think others have seen that and therefore jump on. Sylt is a very popular holiday destination with nice beaches, however it is the northest place in Germany that you can find and you have to use either the train or a ferry to get their (you can take your car onto the train/ferry). You need about 6 hours by car + 30 minutes train ride or nine hours for the complete train ride from DUS/CGN. So it is no surprise that a 1 hour flight is convenient. Also from HAJ it is still almost 4 hours +30 minutes. If I remember correct GWT is repairing their runway and will buy an external power supply for aircrafts (don't know the correct name) for this season (requested by HLX).
Quoting TriStar500 (Reply 11): Expect a trip report about DUS-GWT-DUS with an in-depth look at an airport from a different era of aviation (GWT)
Well, the terminal is looking nice and is quite new - however it is probably smaller than the A320 I travelled there with HLX last year. Both waiting areas were overcrowded with the 100 passengers. Also they open the waiting areas only after the plane has landed and most people were waiting outside the terminal. Bagagge is delivered directly on the trailer, All check-in is done without computers and you have boarding cards with hand-written priority numbers... So the airport is not really from a different era, but flying there is definetly something different.

Norwegian (DY) launch flights to:
Oslo to Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Munich:
OSL-DUS-OSL B733
OSL-HAM-OSL B733
OSL-MUC-OSL B733
Bergen to Hamburg and Berlin:
BGO-HAM-BGO B733
BGO-SXF-BGO B733
I also think Lufthansa starts a summer service between Bergen and Hamburg using CRJ aircraft. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway located on the west coast (known as "gateway to the fjords") with approx. 250.000 inhabitants.

According to the cirrus timetable (http://www.cirrus-world.de), C9 will use for GWT flights their DO328. There is a connecting flight to/from THF to MHG and SCN (DO328). I think they will fly SCN-MHG-THF-GWT so passengers will not have to change the aircraft.

Quoting Humberside (Reply 18): Will the new flights have any effect on LGW's operations at GWT?
I can't answer that, but I fear. A flight DUS-GWT is at the moment 180 (normal, 150 cheap). I'm sure that Hapag or AB will be much cheaper, despite their big Boeings to operate. On the other hand, maybe rich people will book the "exclusive" 19-seat-DO228-flights. I really don't know. If LGW has to reduce fares very much to get passengers, they will drop GWT, I'm sure.
Quoting Humberside (Reply 18): Also, could HDF experience a similar boom is services to the one GWT is experiencing?
