It must be a slow news day. Commercial aircraft get hit by lightning all the time, sometimes even the crew don't realise they have been struck. All aircraft are designed with this contingency allowed for.

Pls don't think so lightly about this. The other day at AMS 5 a/c were struck by lightning and had to go to the hangars for revision, so delays. One of them turned out to have holes in the fuselage. The whole of KL's flight schedule that day was turned upside down with 3 intercontinental flights cancelled!

I wish that all skies were orange and blue!!

I agree, a few months ago here we had a 737 that came in to RON, in the morning there was a huge puddle of water in the aft galley, turns out it had been struck by lightning and there was a hole in the fuselage.

On average a typical commercial aircraft is struck by lightning twice a year. Sometimes it knocks a small hole in the skin, buy most often nothing happens. Storms around an airport are a big deal - they can bring down a plane. Lightning can't.

One smooth landing is skill. Two in a row is luck. Three in a row and someone is lying.

I saw one instance where the lightning exited the aircraft through the left elevator—and took a nice chunk of elevator with it.

Even though 99% of lightning strikes are uneventful (they differ in intensity and its trajectory and damage seem a bit ramdom too), in rare cases, they can wreak serious havoc.

I'm surprised this is on the news. There are several planes struck every day.
