I was wondering, I cant find anything so far on the net but something just flew over the FAT area. It was EXTREAMLY loud. It was at 6:22pm PST. I couldnt make it out because of the weather but it was so loud. I have never heard anything like that over here in that area. If anyone could help out, that would be great!

Thank you
QXatFAT

I'm guessing that you probably heard a sonic boom from military jet traffic. There is a fair amount of training and experimental flights over California. A sonic boom is extremly loud and the military does fly supersonic over the country.

If it was military traffic, then it would be very difficult to know for sure since there is no good tracking system available to the public, so it is just a guess.

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

But this noise lasted for a good 1 1/2 min. I could bairly make out the flashing lights. Unless this was a bigger aircraft for the military, it was not a F-16 or anything. Thank you for the suggestion though. This is just making me go crazy not knowing what it is lol.

I'll hazard a guess - SR-71 from Edwards? This would fit your size profile and also the length of time you heard it (once you see/hear one of these things fly overhead, you don't forget it!)

I thought the SR-71 Blackbirds have been gone for years. They were a victim of the Clinton era budget cuts. They are in museums all over the country.

They surely are amazing planes that are the faster ever built. They would typically fly training routes that flew up the west coast from California, the towards Pacific Northwest and then heading out over Utah and the Rocky Mountains before returning back to California. These flights took all of about 1 hour.

Unfortunately with new satellite technology, the need for the SR-71 almost completely disappeared. The satellites have incredible resolution for spying on whomever and can fly over many parts of the world or at least get to an angle where they can photograph most parts of the world. Huge expensive and secret spy planes are a thing of the past. SR-71s were great and useful in the Cold War and later while spying on Arab nations like Libya, but they just were too expensive.

Since Lemoore is so close it could have been something from there. I lived in Fresno 10 years ago and saw the A-10's and DC-10's and 16's always flying over. I once thought I heard a sonic boom but it was a mainliner taking off with engine trouble. Compressor failure / stall IIRC.

Also, when I lived there a Learjet crashed about 1/2 mile from where I was driving. I dont think I will ever forget it because just moments before I looked up at the plane and identified it as a Lear. I saw the ball of fire and didnt realize it was a plane crash. I thought the apt complex that it crashed into exploded for some reason.

I think NASA got some of them for experiments.

I might guess an F-22, they tend to make a bit of noise.

It could be something with engine trouble. The thing is, it must be from Lemoore or somewhere close. Not Fresno though. Because I never saw it take off or land. It was probably about 30,000 feet or so. It just couldnt be a commercial jet. About 3 months ago a 747 from UA flew over extreamly low. I assumed from SFO. Thank you guys so much. This is giving me good ideas.

I once saw one land at a commercial airport - the turn for final was a little shorter than everyone else in the pattern and they were doing twice the speed...

The pilots of the F-22s here at DM last weekend told me they were flying out of Edwards. Hint, hint.

2 Air Force B-1Bs have been hanging out over at Lemoore NAS for the last few weeks.

Those boys are very, very loud. I would bet you heard one of them.
