America West Likely To Try International Again?

Hey, after its big fiasco with its trans-Pacific route to Japan, is AWA likely to try flying international routes again anytime soon?

Actually, the 'fiasco' wasn't necessarily a bad idea. Nagoya needed some stiff competition, and PHX/LAS were dying for HNL routes. AWA's biggest mistake was their 742s, equipped with 34" pitch in coach, operating 60% cap. Remember, in 1988, one didn't have the 764 to order, the 330s, 340s. Their only other choice for long-haul would have been, and a wiser choice, a D13. It would have served their purposes better, and, in hindsight, perhaps would've grown, instead of bit chap. 11. The reason they purchased the 742s was the expected capacity. Their HNL flights were actually fairly full, it was their NGO routes that hurt them. If one were to say that there is no market for LAS-Japan or PHX-Hawaii. Look at the tremendous success ATA has had with PHX-HNL/OGG, NW has had with LAS-NRT, HA has had with LAS-HNL. Those markets are internationally untapped. AWA was just so poorly mismanaged that they didn't get the chance to capitalize on them. As for the future, I doubt it. They need to regain their presence in a major international city and purport their strengths--PHX!

Transatlantic sector has plenty of capacity right now. Competition is intense. HP would really have to build a big structure all at once. It would make no sense to have all North American stuff and one Paris flight. To make it worthwhile, they would have to do CDG, LHR, FRA, FCO, MAD....

It would make no sense whatsoever for Cactus to fly to Europe.

Last time I checked flights from America to Mexico were international, and HP serves something like 10 cities in Mexico.

Or has Mexico recently become the 52nd American state after Canada (51st)?

Given America West's current operating plans it seems HIGHLY unlikely within the next ten years that they'd start up any overseas flights. Even Hawaii at the moment seems out of the question, seeing as the 757s will be retired around 2010 to be replaced by more A32X's. Last month HP firmed up 4 additional A319 orders to be delivered next year, bringing the total to 14 new aircraft next year.

In order for HP to start up service to Europe or to Hawaii again they would need a widebody long-haul fleet. Most likely an A330, seeing as they are HIGHLY Airbus friendly.

This is what I could see, more service to Canada, maybe Calgary and Winnepeg as the Canadians here would love to have. Maybe service to Mexico and Canada from Las Vegas, they currently have no international flights there. Maybe YYZ and YUL flown by Mesa-Air CRJ's from CMH. But what I could honestly see in the next ten years are flights into Central America Guatamala City, San Jose Costa Rica, Panama City. All very popular tourist and business destinations and given their large feed from SoCal into Phoenix it could be feaseable.

They will be atarting PHX-YYZ flights witht he 320 very soon, I am not sure of the exact date but should be within the month......Although those are not really considered international in Canada, they are designated Trans-boarder because you go through US customs in Canada making it quicker to get out of the airport in the US destination city...

TO Brissie_lions: I realise people love to chide Americans for their lack of geography knowledge, but what many people from outside don't realise is that travel in North America is very liberalised. In most cases you don't even need a passport to travel between countries, a birth certificate will suffice. Also you can fly internationally, in most cases, in less than two hours, either to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This is almost at the same level as travelling between two Schengen Treaty, as you don't need a passport, but, unlike Europe, in NA you need positive id of your nationality like a passport (it will not be stamped, however) or a birth certificate.

When I think of an international flight, I think of a 7 hour flight where upon disembarkment I will show my passport, and it will be stamped. Et al. So while most Americans know Canada and Mexico are separate countries, they rarely recognise travel there as international, hell, people live in Canada, and go to work everyday in Detroit, USA, that's how easy it is to cross the Canadian border.

I doubt America West will be looking at starting any transatlantic or transpacific flights anytime in the near future. As stated earlier, America West would probably need a larger aircraft with increased range. I'm not sure if any of their current 757 aircaft are ETOPS though.

I agree with DesertJets. America West could capitalize on flights to Central America, and possibly Northern South American from their Phoenix hub. As for Canada, flights to Calgary and Winnepeg from PHX and LAS could also be profitable. CMH-YYZ might work, though AirOntario currently serves the route with Dash-8-300 aircraft. CMH-YUL would work well with feed from PHX and LAS connecting in CMH.
(ATA757) Yes, Columbus can handle widebody aircraft. CMH's south runway is 10,250 feet long.

The HP 757s are now on average 15 years old, All ex Eastern and Republic machines except for 3 delivered new in 1987 to HP. There are only 13 of them. So 2010 seems to be a reasonable retirement time for these birds, they will then be 25 years old. Plus with ever increasing numbers of 'Buses in HP colors I'd expect to see A321-200IGWs taking over.

I wonder if anyone here works for HP OPs, unfortunately AWA320 is now at CO, but maybe he has an answer. Could we expect flights to Central America.

International is any flight to another country, and can be anything from a few minutes to fifteen hours long. However, you can't define an international flight by its length. Flights from the USA to Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico are all International, just as flights from the UK to Ireland are, even though average flight times are around the 30 minutes mark.

I think the actual question posed (as intended) was whether America West will add Long-Haul service again. Again, Long-Haul will often be international, but not always ie Moscow-Petrapavlovsk, flown by Aeroflot with a flight time of 9h 5min - but still domestic.

Heya, I usually chime in anything to do wit America Worst. I just cant stand them!!!!! But I would love to see them get better, or get bought out by a good airline like Continental, or Delta.
