Hello everyone at A.Net  Wink Embarrassment  Smile

Was browsing the photo data base & came across an interesting photo of the maintenance area at Hong Kong Chep Lap Kok International Airport.....If you have a close look at the back ground construction has commenced on what I believe might be the next phase of HKG which is a mirror image if the existing concourse....

Is HKG operating at capacity? I personally find it hard to believe considering the airport opened in 1998 & already operating at full capacity and commence construction of the concourse..
Could this be expansion of the maintenance area... Additional hanger ????

Im interested to know as I have flown to Hong Kong once before & spent a few hours checking out the terminal, shops, facilities etc....Awesome place to transit not like old & smelly Bangkok even that BKK is one of my favourite holiday destinations....Can't wait until the new BKK International Opens up for scheduled operations  Wink in July - Sep this year ( I hope) !  Wink

It's the new phase for HAECO, expansion of the maintenence area as you mentioned. Additional terminal is at the other end of the airport, due to open later this year.

How is HAECO doing financially? I remember reading that after the switch from Kai Tak their profits took a hit. With DragonAir and Cathay switching from older L1011s and 747-200/300 series to A330s and 777 there was less of a need for maintenance.

Actually, Airbus_A340 is correct in saying that the construction in the photo is the new HAECO hangar being built.

As for terminal expansion, a new gate for small aircraft was opened this year, built between two larger aircraft gates. Between the two control towers the land has been made into a few bays for regional jet sized aircraft without the need for tugs for pushback. They will be able to taxi in one way then taxi forward to exit.

On the north side, where there is currently space for four widebodies and two smaller aircraft on outer stands between taxiway B8 and B9, there will be a satellite terminal built, with gates for 10 (I think) smaller aircraft in the 737/A320 size. I assume passengers will reach it by an underground passageway. This will open in 2009, and if successful, there is room for more of these satellite terminals on the north and south side.

In addition, a new holding point will be created at runway 07R so that aircraft can hold side by side in the way that is possible at J9 and J10 holding points at runway 25L.

For the freighters, 10 new bays are being constructed to take the total to over 30 bays. Also two new high-speed runway exits will be constructed on the south runway to help the freighter operation.

It's all go here!!

HAECO Maintenance booking is full until 2011/12, a lot of US carrier like UPS / CO / Atlas & NW maintenance by HAECO and some of them ferry their aircraft from US to HAECO only for maintenance.

Let's not forget Qantas might transfer HEAVY maintenance to HAECO in the future if "COST CUTS" are not met....... Angry

I thought the Qantas deal was to somewhere cheap in Mainland China...not HKG? HAECO is relatively expensive..although of very high quality.

....and no, sorry I do not have any drawings handy.

I think the capacity for the current terminal is 48million a year. It used to be 35 million before the northwest concourse opened. I may be wrong though. It can be 35m now.

Pax numbers for Jan 2005 to Jan 2006 was 41.2m. If the terminal capacity is 48m, then the terminal is not at capacity...but if it's 35m, then it is a different story.

The Hong Kong Masterplan on their website does not show the new 10 gate concourse. Where is it?
