Yeah and while I get the writer's comments about the DC-9/MD-80/717 line (2-2 in first when coach is 2-3), I've ridden on plenty of 737s and 320 series in both coach and first. While I can tell that I'm on a 320 in coach by the seat width, in first, seat age tends to be the issue. For example, I cannot say that a Continental 73G in First is any different from a seat comfort point than a US Airways 319 in First. But the 733 versus the 319 - ho boy.

Alas, I am one of those who is probably diluting the value of first class domestically. I've flown first class about 40-50% of the time, but paid for it a grand total of 0 times.

All domestic F for me is a bigger seat, priority deplaning and a little better service (more drink services, more snack options). I've never really noticed a difference in seat width...about 50% of my flights are on MD-88s, the rest on 737/757/767 (all domestic). I've never really experienced much difference in seat width in these cases on Delta, or on A319/A321 and 737/757 on US Airways.

Still, I've paid for domestic F once...at the last minute on a flight sold out in coach. Every other time has been either miles burned or elite upgrades.

it's 1-4 inches extra seat width and 3-7 inches of pitch in most domestic USA F cabins, but you also get more personal space with your own arm rest and some space between the armrests, and more underseat space for your things, so it give the impression of much more overall room.

BTW - the article is silly. It is missing information when it suits the author, makes statements like you 'don't get much' which is just not true, etc.

I can only speak to F on AA and CO because I've flown them in F while other carriers I've only flown in Y domestically, but here are examples of his slant on the products.

He mentions the transcon AA 767s, misinforms about the type of F seat, and then just says the other F seats on AA are fine. He doesn't mention that most of the rest of their domestic fleet is either narrow MD80 F seats or decades old 757 F seats, just calling them 'traditional leather' as if all seats are equal. The 738 F seats are great on AA, the 757 seats are horrible.

He then goes on to say that CO only offers 38" pitch seats on all domestic planes, which is not true. The 75B is flown on many domestic routes including some EWR-LAX runs, IAH-LAX runs, and some florida flights, and the fleet is expanding, with more 75Bs set to do transcons as they enter the fleet, and it provides service in line with AAs F product on transcons with 55" seats and personal video systems, which if he knew the product existed, he might have researched and learned will be replaced with AVOD. Further, the 767s to Hawaii (and also used on a few IAH-EWR runs) need to be mentioned if he is going to mention the AA 767s. On transcons, CO offers the same kind of F service that AA does in terms of food, beyond the limited offerings he mentions. Just like AA, CO offers ice cream sundaes, menus, multi course meals, etc. They offer this on the 75B as well as the 737NG, 753 and 752 and any 767 that happens to be put on transcons for whatever reason. The author may not have bothered to fly CO to find this out, but he should mention he hasn't.

Seems the author has a pro-AA slant compared to CO, which is fine. But that doesn't mean he should leave out information. Sin of omission. Can't tell which other airlines his talking up and talking down since I don't know their F products personally...

D'oh. Forgot to mention I was comparing F cabins on an MD to those on an Airbus or a Boeing...trust me, I've noticed the difference from that of a coach seat.
