As a kid, I remember the yellow smiley face on the nose.

IMO, I think the final livery (Blue) was one of the nicest in the industry.

I read somewhere, a few years back, Southern Airways was to be the NA launch customer of the MD-80.

It was a great airline for we folks down south! Excellent service to LGA on a DC9-10 from VPS, DHN, etc. Flight 760 was the best. Great food, cocktails, clean, spiffy airplane. The crews were all happy and smiling and could not do enough for you. The airline definitely represented the character of the south. They also had some good routes up to Memphis and St. Louis.

I miss them lots.

Some of the best Flight Attendants at NWA are former Southern Airways. Most of the famous "characters" have retired and are missed.

I still remember the excitement of my first trip as an unaccompanied minor (10 years old), June 24, 1972 on SO 91. I travelled IAD - VPS - MOB. I remember the "smiley face" on the nose of the DC-9 as I walked toward the airstairs. I especially remember the beautiful flight attendants in black hot pants and silver go-go boots. The round trip, walk up, coach airfare was $136.00 - which I earned over one year by mowing yards and shoveling snowed in driveways!

Amen to the good old days of hot Southern belles in leather!

Next trip: SLC-LAX-JFK-LAX-SLC on AA, gotta say goodbye to my beloved 762!
