I was at SFO today and was suprised to see that aircraft are being parked, and serviced between flights, at the brand new International Terminal at SFO scheduled to open in September. Today there were 3 United 747-400s, a Korean Air 777, and an Air China 747-400, all appearing to be in the process of cleaning and catering. The jetways were connected to the aircraft and everything (?).

It looks like the scheduled opening will in fact take place in September. Finally.

Yes--I'm sure they want to work out any 'problems' with the equipment before the flying public arrives.

Was the parking garage up above the tramac open?

Yep, I can believe it! United parked planes over at the new terminal a lot. I do recall seeing a US Airway A319 parked at the new terminal just across from the United terminal. I guess that it just wants to join United's fleet a little sooner!

They have been using the new gates on the north half as "remote" gates for several weeks now. Passengers are bused from there to customs in the current international terminal. Current opening day is scheduled for September 20th. And no the new garages are not open yet.

Which does remind me: I was at the well-known planespotters' parking lot next to the south end of Runway 1R at SFO today (6 August 2000), and one thing I noticed was that the Korean Airlines 772ER (arriving as flight KE 23) was moved out of the original International Terminal area after the plane disembarked its passengers. Did they move the plane to one of the north gates of the new International terminal to embark passengers for the return flight?

A San Francisco Examiner article back in March stated that, starting last May, airline flights would begin to use the new terminal a little at a time to give it the "run-through".

Ray, The Korean Air B777 has a long layover at SFO. The plane goes to remote parking inbetween flights

Ah, that explains why (seeing through binoculars) the KE 772ER was being towed away from the gate about 90 minutes after landing. So when is the return flight anyway? Early evening?

Usually RON planes spend the night there or at plat 41 on the other side of the terminal by UAL maintenance, also Charter flts are being taken to the new gates for now that is.

Who gets use of the current international terminal once the new one is open?? I would think United if it stays open.

American most has the best chance of getting the old international terminal. The reason, well, if the UAL USA merger goes through, United will need extra gate space. Currently American operates out of gates 60-68 at SFO, and United operates out of 69-90. So if the merger happens, United will want those extra gates to help accomidate the extra flights. Also, because it is close to the existing United Terminal.

I haven't heard anything differing from the initial plan of demolishing the current A terminal with Southwest and USAirways. The pier from the new Intl Terminal pointing southward is marked "A" I believe. Will they renumber (reletter?) the other ones? Perhaps those airlines will move to the current (old) International Terminal.

Right now the in-use Concourse A (US AIrways/Midwest Express, etc.) is blocking about half of the new Concourse A gates, I believe it will be torn down, it looks that way from the SFO website.
